It’s a DOUBLE holiday weekend! We have Derby day tomorrow, which I really know nothing about as I’m not from Kentucky or do I understand horseracing. I DO understand drinking though, so that’s what we’re going on!

It’s time for our once-a-year super-limited-edition-so-make-sure-you-snag-one Mint Julep cupcake. Each cake is made with muddled mint, real Kentucky bourbon, and garnished with a hand candied fresh mint leaf.  I personally first developed this recipe many years ago when we were a young company and we’d only make a few dozen cupcakes a week. Now, many years and much success later, we have to candy many many more mint leafs, which is precisely why Matt spent last night cursing me out.

Whatever — it’s pretty!

Then Sunday we have Cinco de Mayo, aka “Day We Get Drunk for Something Something Mexico…..Who the F*** Knows”. and what goes better with daydrinking than cupcakes? I’ll tell you what- cupcakes AND nachos!

This, my friends, is the brand spanking new book Ultimate Nachos written by Nachos NY co-founder (and Robicelli’s Chef de Cuisine) Rachel Anderson. Have you ever been at a restaurant and thought “I really want nachos, but there are so many other awesome things on this menu that I also love and want to eat til I’m sick!”. Well Rachel has TOTALLY changed the entire game and made all your filthy eating dreams come true. Alongside recipes for healthy salsas and guacs (boo healthy!), there’s recipes for:

-Philly Cheesesteak Nachos

-Buffalo Chicken Nachos

-Fried Calamari Nachos

-Black and Blue Burger Nachos

-Nacho Dumplings

Know what this is called, kids? MULTITASKING. You buy this book, you feel more productive.  You make 10 different types of nachos, your friends come over and drop dead from being shocked with awesome, and you get to drink all their Coronas. You are now the emperor of Cinco de Mayo.

To celebrate this momentous occasion, this professional website/blog is hosting it’s first ever (possibly only) GIVEAWAY! And since Rachel works for us, we were able to secure two books by simply threatening to withhold her paycheck. Here’s how to win a copy:

Option 1: Hit us up on Twitter and tell us why I should give you a book, followed by the tag #UltimateNachos.  Make me laugh, Send pics. Whomever amuses me the most gets a copy.

Option 2: Send me a photo of you with some nachos over on Instagramagain with the hashtag #UltimateNachos.  Please no porn. I hate that I have to say that, but it’s happened before, and it’s pretty weird for us. I really wish I was joking about this part.

We’ll pick a winner sometime next week, so if you can’t wait to expand your nacho horizons you probably should just head on over to Amazon and buy it. You can preorder another book while you’re over there, if you’re in a book buying mood.

Now it’s time for you to go out and grab our Derby cupcake, Mint Julep, or our Cinco de Mayo cupcakes, Tres Leches and Abuelita, or Banana Cashew, which isn’t affiliated with any holiday but I didn’t want it feeling left out so I still included it in this sentence! Enjoy the weekend, everybody!

Mint Julep: Mint bourbon cake, vanilla buttercream, hand candied mint leaf

Abuelita: Mexican chocolate cake, cajeta buttercream, ground Abuelita chocolate

Tres Leches: Three milk soaked brown butter cake, dulce de leche buttercream, caramel shards

Banana Cashew: Banana cake, cashew buttercream, homemade cashew butter

This weekend, Matt and I will be heading up to Chappaqua to watch one of my best friends of over 25 years get married. (and to make the cupcakes for his wedding. You’re friends with us, you get a dessert buffet as a wedding gift. Which, we suspect, is why we’re so goshdarn popular).

More important than the wedding, though, is the fact that for the first time in over five years, Matt and I will have a night in a hotel room all to ourselves. Which means that we are planning only one thing: the best night of sleep ever

We’re heading down to Sesame Place in about 2 weeks with the kids, one day after doing the cupcakes for THREE weddings in one day, and trust me, you’re going to be hearing a very different sentiment from my blog posts during that vacation. This weekend will be all about sleeping in and enjoying the wonders of complimentary soaps.

Speaking of weddings, we’re now starting to book for the fall, so if you’re getting married and want us to be a part of it, let us know! We do weddings, Sweet 16s, corporate events, birthday parties, office shindigs, and all general hootenanies. Just place your order in advance, because there are days where we’re 100% booked, and the more notice we get, the better odds of us making the magic happen for you.

I talk about baking, it’s “making the magic happen”. I talk about spending a night in a hotel with my husband, its “naps and mini soaps”.  There’s something seriously wrong with us.

Clockwise from front: Bellini, Dom DeLuise, Mango Coconut, Banana Cashew

Bellini: Champagne cake, peach buttercream, champagne simmered peaches

Dom DeLuise: Pistachio cake, cannoli buttercream, chocolate chips, candied citron, roasted pistachios

Mango Coconut: Coconut cake, caramelized mango buttercream, roasted coconut

Banana Cashew: Banana cake, cashew buttercream, cashew brittle

These cupcakes, plus brownies, whoopie pies and more awesomeness, are available at Robicelli’s at DeKalb Market, as well as many of our retail partners

WHY IS IT SO FREAKING HOT.

I know this isn’t the most interesting kind of conversation, but seriously, I am a delicate flower over here and I can’t stand this crap at all.

What I can’t stand more than the heat? Those people on Facebook who post things back in February like “I can’t wait for summer, bikinis and the beach! Bring it on LOLZ!”. And then once the mercury hits 80, they’re posting “Oh my God I hate this heat! I can’t go outside because I’ll melt! LOLZ!”.

You’re old enough to type on the internet, and you still don’t understand how summer works? Really? And are you really LOLZing after everything you say? Because if you aren’t, you’re turning Facebook into a house of lies, and I’ll never be able to trust anything you say again.

I think it’s about time I revisit last weeks idea of migrating to Canada. Any investors up north interested in underwriting a Toronto shop? It’s cool up there, right? I don’t mind cold winters. Way I see it, it gets cold, I can always put on more layers.  It gets hot, I can’t legally get more naked, now can I?

Fortunately, we’ve got a lovely air conditioning unit at our DeKalb Market shop. You should come by today, because we’ve got a free movie tonight, a market wide special I’ll talk about more later today, and these puppies you see right here. Plus, we made Chicken n’Waffles cupcakes for all the midweek customers who don’t get down to Downtown Brooklyn on the weekends. We can’t let you guys feel left out all the time!

Clockwise from front: The Duckie, Banana Cashew, Dom DeLuise, The Hinsch

The Duckie:Peanut cake, peanut butter buttercream, marshmallow buttercream, roasted peanuts

Dom DeLuise: Pistachio cake, cannoli buttercream, roasted pistachios, mini chocolate chips, citron

The Hinsch: Chocolate malted cake, vanilla buttercream, malted chocolate sauce, homemade malted milk balls

Our Urban Daddy Super Bowl offer was a HUGE success- thank you to everyone who helped us sell out!  I got a few emails late today asking if it was possible to get any last minute orders in, but unfortunately we are completely booked for this weekend.

-BUT-

You’ll be able to pick up both the Chicken ‘n’ Waffles AND the Buffalo Chicken cupcakes a la carte at Queen City Cupcakes in Long Island starting today, and at Crespella & Blue Apron Foods in Park Slope on Saturday! As for the rest of our special Super Bowl cupcakes, if you didn’t get in with Urban Daddy, you’re out of luck.  Just be forewarned all those spots are getting limited amounts of each, so as always, early bird gets the worm, or fortune favors the prepared, or something like that.

Mentioning selling out on Urban Daddy gives me the perfect segway into Valentine’s Day ordering.  I opened up the ordering waaaaay early this year knowing full well no one starts planning for Valentine’s til about five days before, and already we’re one third full.

We’re doing one dozen cupcakes hand delivered with a personalized card for $50, which is a lot more delicious than flowers.  Plus, flowers die, and then they become a fire hazard. You know what’s really romantic? SAFETY.

Don’t disappoint your Valentine with impending doom.  Order cupcakes before it’s too late.

Now to today’s flavors. We’ve got a new location in there you may have heard of.

Head up to the 5th floor- you can find our cupcakes at Bar 5F!

Clockwise from front: Pecan French Toast, Caramel Macchiato, Banana Cashew, Bailey’s Cheesecake

Bailey’s Cheesecake: Chocolate Bailey’s cake, Bailey’s cheesecake buttercream, cake crumbs

Pecan French Toast: Maple custard soaked cinnamon cake, maple cinnamon buttercream, maple glazed pecans

Caramel Macchiato: Chocolate espresso cake, caramel macchiato buttercream, crushed chocolate covered espresso beans, caramel & ganache drizzles

Banana Cashew: Banana cake, cashew buttercream, cashew brittle

Matt was on Ink Master on Spike TV last night, and I couldn’t tell any of you to watch because we were under a contractual gag order! GYAH! AND I wanted to post up pics of his tattoo and video clips, but can’t because they haven’t put them on the official site yet! DOUBLE GYAH!

I know for a fact that his episode will be rerun next Tuesday at 9pm, so you guys should catch it. In the event you’re looking for it on your DVR, the name of the episode is….*sigh*…..”Pasties and a Cameltoe”.

I made it two years before I had to write the word “Cameltoe” on this blog.  I guess I can be proud of that.

And while screwing around on the internet today instead of working, you should check out Shane O’Neil, the guy who did Matt’s tat and won the challenge with it.  He’s ridiculously hot and I’ve got a huge crush on him.  Fortunately, Matt’s ok with that because he’s got a crush on Shane, too.

I’ll be updating the blog later today once all the stuff gets posted to Spike TV and I’m 110% positive that we can no longer be sued for talking about the show (we’ve been under gag order for over 5 months about this- and the release instructing us what we were not allowed to say before the show aired was about 10 pages long in 6pt font, meaning I totally didn’t read it).

Here’s pictures of Matt’s tattoo, courtesy of UltraClay!

In the meantime, eat some cupcakes while you wait in eager anticipation!

Hey, its Matt. I’m writing the blog tonight because Allison is underneath two sick kids. She was giving them saline to clear their noses out and I was going to pick them up and bring them to bed, but they dug in their talons and said “NO”, so you’re stuck with me instead.

I’m going to take this time to talk to you about a wonderful thing someone has brought up to me. I am a bad writer cause i have a learning disablility. You see I am very smart orally and aurally but I have difficulties visually.  I find it very hard to write things but I speak very well. I can tell a good story and have an active imagination when Allison lets me use it. So someone told me I should write childrens books, so this tumblr I am going to come up with a childrens story just for you.

There once was a fisherman named Zed, he worked on a big fishing boat. Everyday he would go out and cast his nets to catch that days bounty. But Zed had another love: Painting. When the nets were cast he would get in his little dingy and paint whatever he saw or thought of on the side of his boat. He would paint beautiful scenery and even spaceships going to another world. He would paint in watercolor so that by the time he came back to shore, his painting would wash away, and no one would see it but Zed.

One day it came time to hire an apprentice, his name was Wallace. Wallace came from a long line of bankers but his dream was to be a fisherman like zed. For the first couple days Zed taught wallace all there was to know about catching fish, what nets to use, what fish to keep and where to store the fish they caught on their way to shore.

A couple days later while the nets were out, and wallace was taking his midday nap, Zed decided to get in his dingy and paint a picture. while he was painting Wallace woke up and started looking for zed and he couldnt find him, he called his name and there was no answer. finally he looked over the edge of the boat and saw zed painting a wonderful sunset over the rocky mountains, it was just like listening to a john denver song. wallace took a picture of it, and Zed got mad. erase that picture, he said. Why said Wallace its beautiful. Zed was embarrased about his gift, he was afraid what people would think of him.

So that night on their way home Wallace stopped by his fathers office and showed him the picture of Zed’s painting. His father was breath-taken by the beauty. He offered wallace to buy the paintings from zed so he could put them in an art gallery and show off zeds amazing work.

The next day wallace brought a big present for Zed. When Zed opened it it was a easel, paints and fresh canvases to use. Wallace told him all about what his father said about the art show and buyhing some of Zeds work. Zed was scared he didnt want people looking at his art, he didnt know if they would like it. So wallace finally sat Zed down and said I always wanted to be a fisherman and being in a family of bankers, I thought they would laugh at me and guess what, my father told me as long as im happy and I give it one hundred percent he would be proud of me. So try and show your paintings let people see how you see the world and as long as you give a hundred percent I will be proud of you.

So thats what zed did he spent the next couple weeks painting all types of pictures. and when the night of the big show came all of his pictures sold. Wallace was so proud and zed was happy as can be. Wallace wanted one of the paintings but they were all sold out. but Zed had saved him one a picture of a heart cause if it werent for a friend like Wallace he would have never been able to show his love for art.

the end

hope you all liked it and if you didnt allison will be back later today to write about the Brooklyn Local which is happening Saturday. We’ll have lots of different cupcakes and brownies, including chicken and waffles and some new flavors she announced on Facebook. Allison is also going to be running a make your own cupcake bar for the kids with our cupcakes and buttercream and lots of different toppings, so your kids can design their own and maybe give us some ideas for new flavors. And if your kids like the story I wrote have them come by our table and maybe we can write a story together that I can tell the boys while they’re getting better.

also because this will probably be the only time i get to write the tumblr i made the cupcake picture look like it was in the movie Predator. its a great movie and i think the Predator would like our cupcakes.

Todays flavors are

Bourbon Caramel Apple: Apple cake with salted caramel and bourbon buttercream, drizzled with bourbon caramel sauce and a piece of roasted apple

Banana Cashew: banana cake with cashew buttercream and homemade cashew nut brittle

Chocolate Caramel Pretzel: Chocolate cake with salted caramel buttercream and crushed up pretzels, drizzled with ganache and caramel

Maple Walnut: Maple walnut cake with vanilla buttercream and maple glazed walnuts

Man oh man- I’ve been so busy with all sort of stuff: developing new products and recipes, working on my writing for Nona Brooklyn and our theoretical cookbook, booking events for the summer and fighting for LGBT rights……I think we’re long overdue for a news update so I can keep you all in the loop on the insanity we go through every day.  I will omit the details of all the boring parts, like the endless stacks of paperwork I’m desperately trying to catch up on, or the 8,000 hours we spent on the phone with Dell customer service in India because Windows installed updates that fried our brand new computer.  I’m sure when I’m on my deathbed, I’ll remember those hours where instead of creating precious memories with my children, I was on the phone saying “No, it’s still not working.  YES, I’m sure. WHY WOULD I SAY IT’S NOT WORKING IF IT WAS WORKING.” over and over again, and realize they were some of the most magical of my life.  Thank you for that gift, Windows XP.

THE CUPCAKE STAND:  A few weeks back, the folks from Crespella opened up a combination Uncle Louie G’s/cupcake store in Sunset Park on 5th Avenue right off 60th street, and they’re exclusively selling our cupcakes!  Which means that since they’ve got a big old store to fill, they’re getting a lot more than just the weekly rotation- and we’re making flavors exclusively for them, like our Cookies n’Cream made with homemade dark chocolate wafer cookies.  If you’re in South Brooklyn and need cupcakes for a small party or event, contact them- they do cupcake stands, set-up, and they deliver!

DEKALB MARKET:  The project FINALLY got approval from the Department of Buildings, meaning that after sitting in a holding pattern for what seems like forever, we are finally going into the building phase in just a few short weeks!  There’s going to be a crapton of discussion about the process on this blog and on our Facebook page, where I’m going to be running every stupid decision by you guys because I’m a nervous wreck about all of this.  Right now I’m elbows deep in electrical specs, blueprints, permits, DOH paperwork, paint samples, lighting design, refrigeration quotes etc etc etc.  The plan is to wrap lots of that up today and over the weekend, then next Monday I’ll be able to make a spreadsheet of all our IndieGoGo folks to I can reach out to every single one of you personally.  Or next Monday, I take up drinking again.  Really can go either way at this point.

EVENTS UP THE WAZOO:  Since DeKalb got delayed, I’ve been trying to make up for it by making sure we’ll be popping up all over the place through the summer.  We just confirmed our second consecutive appearance in the VIP area at Meatopia in July, and this year it’s going to be EXTRA epic.  This event will sell out, so get your tickets sooner rather than later.  Yes, it’s expensive, but it’s also probably the best food event that will happen in NYC all year. Plus, I’m pretty sure you get a t-shirt!

If you can’t wait until July to see us, here’s what’s on tap for the next week:

-Monday our family will be participating in the RALLY FOR MARRIAGE EQUALITY in Bay Ridge. We hope that many of you will be able to come down and join us as we support my aunts and our many gay friends in their fight to be recognized as equal citizens under the law! (this has nothing to do with cupcakes- it’s just really important to us and our family)

-Thursday we’re at Tasting Table’s LOBSTER ROLL RUMBLE, the most delicious non-meat NYC food event of the year.  Mini whoopie pies will be there as well as cupcakes!

-Saturday 6/11 day we’re sponsoring TECHMUNCH, and hanging out with all you food bloggers and media types.  See my idiocy at all things technological firsthand, as I make my Blackberry crash multiple times and ask questions like “why doesn’t my Blackberry fix itself when I scream at it really loudly and say dirty things about it’s mother?”

-Saturday 6/11 night we’ll be at the Brooklyn Lyceum for the POST GAY PRIDE PARADE PARTY.  Who doesn’t love a dance party?

-Sunday 6/12 we’ll be at the HESTER STREET FAIR PICNIC, an all-food event with ping pong tables!

And then the next Monday….

OUR FIRST VACATION IN TWO YEARS!  We’ve decided that it’s really not fair how our kids are constantly getting screwed by our insane work schedules, so we’re shutting down for one Wednesday delivery day, driving down to our favorite vacation spot of Route 1, New Jersey, and spending three glorious days at Sesame Place!  Glorious Sesame Place- the only place on earth where I can walk around in a swimsuit and not feel as if my body is being scrutinized, because every woman there has given birth at least once.  It shall be a long needed vacation from pants as well!!!

But all these things are in the future, and the cupcakes you see below are in stores NOW.  Or really close to now if you’re reading this before all the deliveries are finished.  No matter- you should eat one, because you’ve probably had a tough week, and you deserve something nice. :)

I’ve got pretty much nothing great planned for this post (in contrast to the usual GOLD you folks expect from me three times a week), because we got out of the kitchen ridiculously late.  The reason is that tonight we had to deal with my greatest nemesis ever: Mini Cupcakes.

Actually, tonight kicks off a whole two weeks of minis.  Today’s are meant for The Bell House, where they will be sold at The Skint’s End of Hibernation party.  We’re also preparing them for next week’s Choice Eats, and the following week’s Tasting Brooklyn event.  For the next 14 days, if you’re in Sunset Park and you can faintly hear curses being carried on the wind through the night, that will be me screaming at the top of my lungs over at our kitchen in the Bush Terminals.

My problem with minis is very simple- the holes to put the batter in are very very small, and I have huge-ass hands. Sure, they’re useful for getting honey out of trees and paddling small watercraft, but big hands don’t exactly make you feel ladylike.  And if there’s one thing I like to think of myself as, it’s a motherf**king lady.  So it’s not that I have an issue with ACTUAL mini-cupcakes-I will gladly eat a truckload of them.  I just can’t make them without ripping my self esteem to shreds and crying myself to sleep after work.  You know, normal occupational hazard of the cupcake biz.

As much as I complain, tonight wasn’t as bad as most, as I noticed that our intern Rachel has dainty girlish hands, so she handled the bulk of the portioning. From this point forward, all intern applications must include a tracing of your hands.  Extra points if you color it in so it looks like a turkey.

Now for the flavors that you can purchase either in mini form tonight, or beautiful, sexy and non-judgmental standard size from our retail partners.

DUCKWALK:  Vanilla cake, blueberry port syrup, blueberry port & mascarpone buttercream, port simmered wild Maine blueberries

We have the best fans in the world, you know that?

Since we launched the IndieGoGo campaign about 10 days ago, we’ve been overcome with emotion every time someone donates, and get all misty eyed reading some of your comments.  Even more amazing to me us is that people actually read this blog or our Twitter and pay attention to all the crap that’s coming out of my mouth.  After only a few days of our campaign, I get an email from another girl named Alison who says she’s a big fan and knows how hopeless I am with technology (it’s true! I so crazy!).  Anyhow, said Ms. Alison is a professional film editing and post-production type person, and offers out of the goodness of her heart to come to our kitchen to shoot a video for our IndieGoGo! SERIOUSLY!!

Ms. Alison Grasso has totally blown a hole in my whole “Alisons who spell their name with only ONE ‘L’ are inherently evil-that’s how you tell them apart from us normal, two “L” Allisons. Like how if you’re talkng to twins and you’re trying to figure out which one is evil, you go with the one that has a goatee” theory.

That random act of kindness alone would normally be enough to make my heart swell up with so much joy that I feel it could burst, but yet there’s more!!!  Let me introduce you to Mr. Steven Cobb.  Steve is one of our fans who reached out to us over Twitter last year, and since then we’ve become friends in the “Tweeting back and forth and seeing each other at events” sort of way (which, sadly, constitutes 90% of all of my adult relationships).  He’s also one of the most altruistic and generous people I’ve ever met.  So of course, when we announced that we’re donating 25% of all private deliveries this week to help Japan, I wasn’t surprised at all to hear that he wanted to order cupcakes.

However, what DID surprise me was that he wanted to buy two dozen, but DIDN’T personally want the cupcakes.  In fact, he doesn’t even have anyone in particular he wants to send them to.  He just wants to be able to contribute to the cause in some way, and be able to send cupcakes to whomever wants them to brighten up their day.  Now how amazing is that?!!?!?! (And YES ladies, he’s single!)

Now the inevitable question: who should these two dozen cupcakes go to?  Join the discussion on Facebook- make the case for yourself or nominate someone you think who deserves it.  We’ll pick two lucky people by the end of the week to receive a little ray of sunshine from our good friend Steve.

Best fans ever. For real.

Now…….flavors!!!

Good morrow ladies & gentlemen!  Hope your weekend was spectacular- we on our part made three wonderful discoveries:

#1: Campo de’Fiori in Park Slope makes an excellent pizza, particularly the one slathered in sexy-as-f%#k burrata. Between that and the life-altering experience I had at Paulie Gee’s last weekend, as a native I can only say the BK pizza world is getting better.

#2: I state this without a single iota of hyperbole:

The movie “Cool As Ice” will completely change your life.

This is the movie that makes “Showgirls” look like “Citizen Kane”. It will challenge your notions of such things as “music”, “love” and “physics”.  And it will cause you to face the important questions in life, such as “Why don’t people shave lines into their eyebrows anymore?”.

Interesting note before watching: the cinematographer went on to win an Oscar for his work on “Schindler’s List”.  That was not a joke.

#3:  Each year I watch the Oscars, and each year I’m always completely disappointed (exception if Steve Martin is hosting).  This year I didn’t watch the Oscars, followed the whole thing on Twitter, and got to watch the entirety of America be disappointed as I watched the first season of “Party Down” on Netflix. Technology is a beautiful thing.

And now to get your workweek off on a sweet note, we’ve been dropping off cupcakes all morning.  Since this is the first week on our new schedule of Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, make a note of the list on the bottom to find out where we’re delivering to today!

It’s 2am and we just got home from the kitchen.  There’s an 18” snowdrift in my driveway right now.  I’m not sure when these cupcakes are getting to stores….let’s just say “eventually”.  Keep up with us on Twitter for delivery updates.

On a serious note- as irritating as the snow is to everyone, this weather is literally killing small businesses all over New York City.  Every independent business that doesn’t sell rock salt is hurting bad right now, and needs your help. Before the month is over, please go out to eat, order in one night, or go buy yourself something pretty.  All us little guys will appreciate it something terrible.  :)
