I have now been inside for two whole freaking weeks.

Yep.

So, erm- what’s the weather been like? Is it nice outside? It’s been nice in here too. My mom sent over a pair of fleece sweatpant that are super comfortable, and I’ve been wearing them for a few days now.

They’re, um, you know, really great.

Let’s see…….hmmmmm…….oh! I caught up on a whole bunch of tv shows that I haven’t had time to watch for years, like Damages and RuPaul’s Drag Race. Kinda sucks though because everyone else has already seen them, so I can’t really go on Facebook and talk about my reactions and feelings with other people. My cats watch with me, but I’m totally not at that stage of cabin fever where they can talk.

Yet.

I’m writing a lot, which is good. This time next year the book will be out, and I’ll hopefully be on tour somewhere. I hope I get to go to Pittsburgh, because I was there once ten years ago and I really liked it. I remember grabbing lunch at a ChiChi’s where my waitress decided she needed to sit with me because she was really impressed that I was from Brooklyn, and in exchange for me telling her all about what it was like to live there, she told me about her methadone addiction. I had a chimichanga. Is that a real Spanish word? Chimichanga? I think the more I say it, the more made up it sounds. “Chimichanga”. CHIMMEY-CHON-GAAAAHHHH.

I bought a new shirt, too! Off the internet! It’s really nice. I’m looking forward to wearing in a week or so when I’m off my major bedrest.

*sigh*

Guys- go outside today and ENJOY THE CRAP OUT OF IT. Because you don’t understand how lucky you are to do such simple, stupid things- like going to the grocery store to get an avocado, or ridiculous stupid minutia that I totally miss.

One more week. One more week and I’m going to be up and out of bed. I’m going to go buy an avocado, go have a latte, then maybe hit the post office and mail the f**k out of some letters. It’s going to be amazing.

Now plot about how you’re going to leave your desk today and go get yourself a brownie, or a whoopie pie, or one of these cupcakes. And really enjoy every single second of today, because, well, it’s only going to be today once!

For the second year in a row, a film about little old us has become an official selection at the prestigious NYC Food Film Festival! This time last year I was telling you how amazing it was- getting to watch short films about food while actually EATING the food- and how you needed to get tickets ASAP. This year….

You’re already out of luck. Hopefully it’s because you all remembered my notes from last year and already got your tickets!
I’m completely bummed that I personally won’t be there to hang out with the audience and stuff my face, but Matt will still be there handling the Q&A and representing Robicelli’s alongside Alison Grasso, the filmmaker behind “Bklynography”.  She asked us to take her on a tour of a few of some of our favorite places to eat and shop in our neck of Brooklyn so she could film it, and we were stoked not only to hang out with her, but also to eat 7 times in one day between 8am and noon. Because we’re professionals and that’s how we do things.
Since this Saturday is absolutely monumental for her as it marks her film festival debut, I thought it would be fun to subject Alison to her very first interview and learn about what inspired her to make the film, what makes her tick, and pick her brain about movies. Here we go!

Why did you move to Brooklyn?
I moved to Brooklyn in August of 2008 after I graduated from NYU. Mainly I looked to Brooklyn because Manhattan was muy expensivo, especially when you’re a poor post-college kid. I had visited a friend who moved to Boerum Hill a few months earlier and really loved the neighborhood - its bars, restaurants, and general “main street” small town community feeling. I knew I could get more for my money in Brooklyn. And it’s like it had all the amenities and perks of Manhattan, like 24hr bodegas (for drunk shopping) and great subway accessibility (for drunk transporting) but with way fewer tourists, more small, local businesses, and just a more homey sort of feeling.

When I was finishing college, I lived in an apartment in Chelsea, and while it was a great neighborhood, my bedroom was about the size of  large closet (complete with sliding pocket door), our “kitchen” was a very narrow hallway, and the constant bustle made me feel a little strung out. Our “landlord” was a giant management company that was difficult to deal with and the rent was “just too damn high” to continue on that way, even if Jack McBrayer DID live around the corner (he did.) Now I go back to that neighborhood and what few unusual places that were there when I moved out are mostly gone - I don’t know why I’m still surprised when everything turns into a Duane Reade/Starbucks/American Apparel/Bank of America but it’s somehow disheartening nonetheless.
What made you start Bklynography?

Brooklyn is awesome, mostly. I love my neighborhood and community, and more than that, I feel really grateful to be a part of it. Giant corporations swallow up small businesses all the time, which is tragic to me. I wouldn’t be able to handle living in a suburban strip mall town where everything is the same, mile after mile. Not everyone has access to Sweet Potato Casserole cupcakes and locally brewed beers and artisanal mayonnaises, let alone the interesting, engaging, and unique people who create them. And there’s always something different going on in Brooklyn - between flea markets, and Guacfests and concerts and outdoor movies and Chili takedowns and dance parties - it’s almost too much to take in. I want other people to know how wonderful Brooklyn is, especially my college friends who are holding out in Manhattan on the Upper East Side. Would you freakin move already?! Actually don’t do that you’re gonna make the rent go up.
What drew you to film?
I started doing analog photography my sophomore year in high school. That same year, I first became aware of film as a potential job thing that people can do. My brother plays traditional Irish music (primarily the uilleann pipes [it’s an Irish bagpipe that is significantly less horrible than the Scottish bagpipes]) and when I was in high school he got hired to play on the set of a movie called Gods & Generals. It was the sequel to Gettysburg. Jeff Daniels was in it, I’m pretty sure. Anyway I begged my mom if I could take the day off school and go with him and my dad to the set, and she agreed. It was awesome. It was like traveling back in time to the Civil War, except dudes were sitting around eating Doritos in confederate uniforms. Basically I just hung around and watched everything and decided, “This is a job where you can wear whatever you want to work. I want this job.” We met Jeff Daniels’ stunt double and saw guys manipulating horses’ legs out of camera frame. It was the greatest day of my young life* (til I got to college and had my picture taken with Mo Rocca in Washington Square Park one time).

What are you doing now?
Originally I wanted to be a director of photography, but I decided that set life wasn’t for me - too much heavy lifting and long, long hours. Plus, the crippling anxiety! I also really liked editing so I chose that. Editing has an “undo” button most of the time which I like.

So now, I am an assistant editor at a commercial post-production facility. I get to work on commercials for things like Dairy Queen, AND I still get wear whatever I want to work. In my spare time, I shoot photos and make videos of my own, and try desperately to find time to go to the post office. I run Brooklynography, which, unfortunately, has been a bit defunct lately as I’ve been busy with other projects on the side. I also spend a lot of time seeking out cool new things, eating delicious stuff, and playing with my new puppy Igby.

Can you explain “Mullholland Drive” to me? Because I still don’t get it.
I’ve never seen Mullholland Drive and based on its description on Netflix Instant I refuse to watch it.
What about Kristen Stewart? I don’t get that, either.

I’m not sure if I “get” her. I appreciate that she isn’t Taylor Swift though. That is refreshing about her. Also I don’t think the slut-shaming was fair. We all make mistakes, Kristen!!

What’s up next for you?
Next? I don’t know! Maybe some photo projects? I’d like to take an awesome trip somewhere cool and far away. I’d like to live in Paris for a while (and start a short-lived spin-off project, Parisography.) I’d like to invest in camera stabilization equipment. This was meant to be a wishlist, right?

Say something nice about me, because its my blog and I call the shots around here. Also, I have your puppy.
Allison Robicelli is my muse, even though her name has an extra L that is completely superfluous. I don’t remember how I found out about their cupcakes, it was probably through Fucked In Park Slope, but this product changed my life. It’s sort of sickening that I’m the kind of frail personality whose life can be upended by a baked good, but whatever. Robicelli’s represents everything good in a food business. Their flavors always change. They’re seasonal, they’re exciting, they’re different. It’s something to chase and look forward to. In my opinion, stagnation is sort of what kills a business. Once it’s predictable and boring, I’m not interested anymore. If I can get it any day, then why do I need to get it today!?
On top of making a super great product, Allison and Matt are the sort of friendly, outgoing, inspiring business owners who make a community what it is. And they don’t have some intern sitting behind the twitter, Allison pushes the buttons and stays in touch with a number of people I cannot even imagine. They personally work events where they’re selling their product! I’m pretty sure Matt and Allison have clone versions of themselves because I don’t know how they can do so much all the damn time. They care about their community and their customers and their family, and that is goddamn beautiful. Plus they give me free cupcakes sometimes.

PS: I’m from Maryland, nothing cool or exciting ever happens there.

…………………………………………………………………………………….

I’m you’re muse! Oh, you’re just too much, Alison with your freakish “one L” in your name! Too much indeed!

Now go buy a cupcake or some whoopie pies or something and get yourself super stoked for Saturday!

DID YOU PLACE YOUR THANKSGIVING ORDER YET?!?!? HUH?!?!?! DIDJA DIDJA DIDJA?!?!?!

I have to lead with that because even though I thought Thanksgiving was an entire week away, we’ve apparently already skipped straight ahead to Christmas.  I stopped into Starbucks today and the carols were blasting, the decorations were everywhere, and Thanksgiving blend has already been put in the vault in favor of Christmas roast (which tastes remarkably like elf blood and cheer! It’s delicious!).

I’m glad “the man” made me switch to a more joyful coffee a bit prematurely, because today I began the build out of our space at the Union Square Holiday Market!  It’s painted a lovely shade of paint called Red Velvet (not kidding).  I assembled all our Flurms and Shmurgens from Ikea and the table my dad custom made for us in a 25 square foot booth, and strung up 1100 Christmas lights so our booth glows like the sun.  That last part is really important as I managed to get lost in the market 7 times today, so I want to give you guys a chance to find us.

Even in the first day of build-out, this market is already one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen.  I cannot wait for you guys to come down and visit us.

So while I was busting my ass getting the booth all ready to go for you guys, what was Matt doing to put you guys in the Christmas spirit?

Yep. Christmas spirit.

He also put a shirt on and made these cupcakes, and what do you know, there’s a new fall flavor in there!  Trotting it out for you to love it, just to cruelly rip it away at the end of the week and forcing it into the depths of the vault! We can be such jerks sometimes!

This is sort of the sad part of fall for me, because I wait all damn year for the fall flavors to come back, and now as we burn through the schedule and get closer and closer to Thanksgiving, we start putting them back in the vault til 2012.  Most of what you’ve seen this month will not be going back to stores this year, and we’re almost done baking off our batters for DeKalb.  I try to be optimistic and think about all the exciting new Holiday flavors that are coming up, like Port Poached Pear, Chocolate Paneforte and Milk & Cookies, but I still know what the end of fall means……

Sad Panda is not looking forward to shoveling snow this year.

Ok, enough with this sadness nonsense.  Let’s talk happy stuff- like:

being mentioned by New York Magazine for the “Pumpkin Beyond Pie” feature! Seriously, every time we’re mentioned on a list that includes Francois Payard and Jacques Torres, I need to slap myself.  Chef Torres is the entire reason I wanted to go into pastry when I was 15 years old (thanks to his amazing ‘Dessert Circus’ program on PBS), and Payard is on a very high pedestal in my book.  And now Chef Torres and I are neighbors at DeKalb Market! Fifteen year old Allison it totally freaking out over it!

Of course, this whole slideshow is a reminder that you need to get your Thanksgiving orders in ASAP.  If you don’t want to order through us, you CAN order at your local Robicelli’s retailer- all our Thanksgiving flavors are going to stores both Monday and Wednesday next week.  Now I’m going to quit nagging you about it- because there’s still two more blog posts this week where I can do that and I need to save my strength.

Cupcakes! Go eat!

Today we’re releasing TWO new flavors, because we only have a limited amount of time in which we can do our fall flavors, and we think of new ideas faster than we can make them.

And yes, FALL flavors. I don’t care if it’s 90 freaking degrees outside.  I’ve been wearing a scarf and hat all week just out of principle.  If I could take a stand against Matt with the pajama jeans, I certainly can take a stand against Indian Summers as well with neckwear.  You hear me, fall!  No more of this crap! I demand at least 70% more crisp breezes!

Now to our new flavors, Pumpkin Pie and Tarte Bourdaloue.  The first, well, you all know what pumpkin pie is.  The second has been on Matt’s list for a long while- Tarte Bourdaloue is a classical French tart that was the first thing he ever learned to make in pastry school (I believe he also made it when he was the Bread/Pastry Chef at Lutece).  We know a lot of people haven’t heard of it, but by golly EVERYONE has heard of cupcakes, so we hope by cross-pollinating it’ll make you want to go and seek out a proper one, or perhaps try your hand at making one yourself.  It is insanely, insanely delicious.

And also, everyone said that pie was the new cupcake, but we’ve turned pie into cupcakes! Who’s laughing now, pie?!?!?!? WHO’S LAUGHING NOW?!?!?!?!?

And look at the location list for today- there’s a new one in there, in TriBeCa!

Clockwise from front: Tarte Bourdaloue, Chocolate Caramel Pretzel, Apple Maple Crisp, Pumpkin Pie

NEW! Tarte Bourdaloue: Pear cake, almond buttercream, white wine poached pear, roasted almonds

NEW! Pumpkin Pie: Pumpkin cake, vanilla buttercream, crushed pate brisee

Chocolate Caramel Pretzel: Chocolate cake, salted caramel buttercream, crushed pretzels, caramel & ganache drizzles

Apple Maple Crisp: Apple cake, vanilla buttercream, roasted apple butter, oat crisp, maple drizzle

Even with some last minute finagling, we couldn’t manage to get out of working on Friday- our 5th anniversary.  I wouldn’t make it home from Madison til at least 10, and we had to be up by 8 the next morning.  Yes, it was incredibly disappointing, but I’m used to it- even if I do miss romance something terrible.

Matt texts me to say that he wants me to hurry home, because he’s got a special surprise waiting for me.  I don’t know what it could possibly be, but I decide maybe all is not lost, so I’m going to pick up something sexy for us after work. And in my marriage, something sexy doesn’t come from Fredrick’s- it comes from Eataly.

I filled a basket with sexy marbled bresaola and proscuttio, paper thin slices of capicola and sopressatta, olive oil breadsticks, oozing cheeses and slabs of focaccia. Oh my God it was so gorgeous I’m getting all tingly just thinking about it.

Since my impromptu shopping trip has made me late, I hop in a cab, and start playfully texting him that I’ve got a surprise for him myself.  The rest of the texts get pretty unprintable for this blog, even though I was referencing food the whole time, and Matt was…..well, you’ll see in a second.

I hide the bag behind my back, open the front door, smile and ask him if he’s ready to see what I bought for our anniversary.  He says to wait, because he wants to show me his surprise first.

He steps to the side, and reveals our table- covered with capicola, sopressatta, proscuttio, eggplant, provelone, and artichokes from A&S Pork Store, and a big loaf of Il Fornaretto bread.

We ate like pigs, watched the end of the Phillies/Cards game, and passed out on the couch.  It was awesome.

AND THIS IS WHY OUR MARRIAGE WORKS.

Thanksgiving has finally arrived, and so marks the unofficial end of fall.  We’ve had good one, filled with lots of happy memories, and lots of great seasonal flavors.  This is the last time you’ll be seeing most of these until next year, so make sure you enjoy them before they go back in the vault!

We are doing ALL of our deliveries today, so that we can spend the next few days with our kids putting up the tree, hanging our stockings, and stuffing our faces before the madness of the holiday season begins.  We’ll be back to our normal delivery schedule on Monday, and posting our holiday market schedule very soon (you’ll be seeing TONS of us from now until Christmas).

Aaaannnnd I forgot to take pictures of these before I left the kitchen tonight.  I had a really long day.  I mean, we did six flavors and close to 1,000 cupcakes, just the two of us!  It’s a miracle I’m typing relatively coherently right now.  I fully expected this post to be 95% misspelled, peppered with curse words and threats against the Church of Scientology (you know, for funzies).  Just close your eyes and envision the beauty of the cupcakes- trust me, they’re sexy as all hell.

We are having one of the most spectacular weeks of our lives over here!  First, if you follow our Twitter, you’ll have seen that we spent all of Tuesday at beautiful Terhune Orchards and Farm in Princeton, NJ, and we brought home a ridiculous amount of delicious local produce for cupcakes!  Our sons Atticus and Toby picked over 80lbs of apples which we are turning into apple cakes and apple butter, both of which are featured this week.  We also used this field trip as an excuse to go to The Bent Spoon and grab tons of ice cream, as it’s without question our favorite artisan food shop in the entire world.  If you ever have a free day and a car, you must make the trip down there- it’s the greatest food experience I have ever had in my entire life.

Then tonight, we were joined in the kitchen by the amazing Ms. Liza de Guia, who shot a piece on us for her James Beard nominated series FOOD CURATED!  We are both huge fans of her work, so it was an amazing honor to have her profile us (not to mention, she’s just such an awesome chick to hang out with).  So in honor of her visit, we created three new flavors to debut this week!  I am especially in awe of how delicious the butternut squash came out (made with local squashes courtesy of our friends at the Greene Harvest CSA), so you need to try that one.

And finally, we have gotten word that the McRib is back!  This has absolutely nothing to do with cupcakes, or is remotely good for you, but we’re still going to hit up McDonalds and devour them like it’s 1988.  Go McRib!

And now- this weekends flavors!

NEW!!!  Butternut Spice:  Butternut squash cake with vanilla buttercream, candied spiced pumpkin seeds, drizzled with butternut squash seed oil

NEW!!!  Dark Chocolate Dulce:  Dark chocolate cake with dulce de leche buttercream, drizzled with dark chocolate and sprinkled with sea salt flakes
