We’ve got cupcakes heading to stores today (of course), but we’ve got some BRAND SPANKING NEW BAKED GOODS in our online shop right this very second! Well, they’re not exactly NEW per se, but you haven’t seen them since last March, so there’s a good chance you forgot they existed. So “brand spanking new to you baked goods” then!

First up is……

image

PASSOVER SEA SALT BROWNIES!  We made these last year to sell at our now-bulldozed shop at DeKalb Market (RIP 2011-2012), and the entire lot which was meant for a few days sold out in two hours. They are that delicious.

Our Passover brownies are made without flour or leavening, using all Kosher ingredients and Made-In-NYC Streit’s Matzoh Meal. Since we’re not in a certified kashrut facility nor are we under Rabbinical supervision, these brownies are unfortunately not kosher. However if you don’t keep a kosher household, they’re as kosher as anything you’d make yourself. Matt and I also have professional experience working in kashrut kitchens, meaning we inspect our eggs, bake in disposable certified pans, etc.

You can order them through our online store, and we’re going to be sending them to retail shops that want them! (And if you happen to be a retail shop we’re not working with but YOU want them, check out our wholesale page)

Next….

MATT’S FAMOUS IRISH SODA BREAD! And no, your eyes are not deceiving you- those are raisins in there. We all know by now how much I despise raisins with every fiber of my being and think they should fed only to prisoners and very bad children, but they’re kinda traditional in this instance and we can’t fight the man. But we can fight against raisins’ suckitude by using the golden variety (which for some reason I don’t think are evil- if you’ve read this blog for any period of time you know that logic isn’t my strong suit). And to fix them further, we rehydrate the raisins so they’re more like their former selves as grapes. We also decided that reconstituting them in water would be boring, so instead we use Drambuie, aka “Scotch whiskey blended with honey”. BOOM! CHECK OUT THOSE SKILLS, RAISINS!

If you want these shipped in time for St. Patrick’s Day, you’ll need to order them by 8am Tuesday morning. They’ll also be turning up at select locations, like Queen City Cupcakes in Patchogue and ALC in Bay Ridge. They’re wonderful sliced up and stored in the freezer, then toasted for a quick breakfast or accompaniment to a cuppa tea, or you can just eat an entire loaf whole to help stave off alcohol poisoning. After all, that’s what carbs are for.

And finally- today’s cupcakes! You’ve got to venture out of the house to grab these, because we don’t ship them. But I just checked the Weather Channel and there’s no sort of snow/rain/fog/pollenpocolypse scheduled for today, so you should all be safe.

THE WORLD IS GOING TO END!!!! EVERYBODY GO OUT AND BUY ALL THE BOTTLED WATER, BATTERIES, CUPCAKES AND BOURBON YOU CAN!!!!

Thank you, New York Daily News, for reminding us about the trye potential horrors of this storm- FROZEN SQUIRRELS.

Because we want to make sure that if you have cupcakes to keep you happy while you’re trapped inside during the Snowtorious B.I.G. or whatever ridiculous thing they’re calling it on Foursquare at this point, we are hitting the road before dawn today, meaning as you read this there are more than likely cupcakes close to you right now. And other people could be out there stocking up on them, and by the time you get to the store all that will be left is canned mushrooms and expired Tang. Moral of the story is that you should totally blow off your job right now and start panicking, because we need to have PRIORITIES at a time like this!

Know what’s going to make this blizzard extra special? It ALSO happens to be Chinese New Year. Meaning that two of the cupcakes out today are of the once a year, get them before someone else does because you won’t see them again til the Year of the Horse flavors. Come Monday we get to our once a year Mardi Gras flavors, then Valentine’s Day with more limited edition flavors and our one night only dessert pop-up at the Owl’s Head. You should probably be planning your upcoming menus around all that news while you’re trying to figure out what to make with the 14 jars of relish and dried beans that are left at the supermarket.

NOW BACK TO PANICKING, AND FLAVORS!!!

I’ve been sorta crappy at my life these past few weeks as my book deadline has approached- not sleeping, eating tons of junk, ignoring my kids, half-assing the blog, not acting like an idiot on Twitter. It’s been all stress and writing all the time, with occasional breaks to go to the doctor.

Most of all, I’ve been bummed that I haven’t been able to do more for Sandy Relief since this book has totally owned me (and you guys BETTER buy it with what I’ve been through! [shakes fist]), and I’ve been physically rehabbing from the accident in October. I know I’m one person, I’m not superhuman, that some people have told me that I’ve done enough, but I still don’t feel like it. I still feel sad and worthless against Sandy, still feel heartbroken for all my friends I see on Facebook struggling every single day.  We own a bakery- we’re not saving the world.

Then good people like you give me perspective and remind me why we do this in the first place. We’re featured again on Fab.com this week- we’re selling hot cocoa, not rebuilding houses or counseling people. Last night I got this letter:

Hello,

I just received my order of cocoa today, ordered it from Fab.com. I really needed a treat, this did the trick. Have been a tad stressed, been doing a lot of cleaning, fixing and repairing from the flood. Having a water view, not so great, just another reason for not loving living in Brick, NJ. I digress….obsessing about finding the perfect cocoa mix, I decided to bite the bullet and spend an amount I never thought I would for cocoa. So happy I did. It is uber scrumptious. Wish I could get to Brooklyn to thank you personally but it is a bit of a schlep. It was a bad year….this made it better. You are truly appreciated.

      Sonnie

That’s the nicest letter anyone has ever sent me. I know how much food means to me- how every time I miss my grandmother I go have linguine at New Corner and don’t feel sad anymore, or how my heart is totally broken over the news that Hinsch’s is closing for good and will probably become something awful like an Arby’s, or how I ate a cake a day during the holidays because they were KILLING ME.  I got into food to make people happy, and sometimes between all the invoices and paperwork and other glamorous stuff, I forget we are actually responsible for some of those amazing moments ourselves.

So now- let’s stop being sad and start being awesome again!

This Saturday, there’s TWO things you can do. First is a series of walks in Sandy-affected neighborhoods- “rallies”, really- that are raising awareness of how badly the government has failed our neighbors, and pleading for support. You can participate in Brooklyn (Coney & Gerritsen), Queens (Rockaway), Staten Island, Long Island, and four spots in New Jersey. Click on the flyer above to go to their Facebook page and learn more!

The second event Matt and I will be in attendance for- Shame on Sandy at Highline Stages. Tickets are expensive (and almost gone), BUT you’ll be eating food from Mario Batali, Michael White, April Bloomfield, Daniel Boulud, Eric Ripert, Jonathan Waxman and more of the best chefs in all of America. It’s a bargain when you think of it that way, AND 100% of the proceeds are going to the Mayor’s Fund.

And today, go get some cupcakes or hot cocoa or brownies, and make yourself happy. You probably deserve it- I’m sure of it.

Oatmeal Cream Pie: Brown sugar oat cake, marshmallow buttercream, oat crisp

Bluth: Chocolate banana cake, chocolate buttercream, roasted walnuts, ganache

Butterbrew: Butterscotch soaked cake, butterscotch buttercream, edible gold dust

Car Bomb: Chocolate Guinness stout cake, Jameson whiskey ganache, Bailey’s buttercream

If you haven’t heard the news over on Facebook or Twitter or Grub Street…..

WE ARE THE FINAL PEOPLE IN BROOKLYN TO GET A COOKBOOK DEAL!!!!

You got THAT right, Macaulay Culkin!

As of this week, Matt and I are officially the legal property of Penguin/Viking Studio! I have had all sorts of crazy stuff going on about this behind the scenes for weeks, and I couldn’t tell you guys a single thing about it. Now that it’s totally, 100% official, I can finally start answering some of the questions I’ve been posed about it.

Question #1: So, is this book just about cupcakes or what? I mean, cupcakes have been over since 1997.

Well, of course it’s going to be about cupcakes. BUT there’s going to be a lot more to it. There’s going to be a lot of attention paid to the “extras” we put on cupcakes. Things like jams, candies, custards, puddings, gastriques, homemade speculoos, pate a choux, marshmallows, etc. In doing this, we’re going to be explaining a ton of technique, and touching on the science behind pastry.

The driving force behind the book, just like it is with our company as a whole, is to use the ubiquitous cupcake to convince people to try something new. This is going to be a really fun book to read, and I’m hoping to inspire some people who would never attempt to make dessert to get into their kitchens and try!

#2: Cookbooks aren’t fun! YOU’RE A FILTHY LIAR!

I’m not lying! The awesome thing about the people at Penguin is that they’re fans of the blog, and believe in the idea of the book being an extension of this haphazard crapshow. That means lots of me being a smartass, comics, and of course, funny essays on such riviting topics as

-The night we fell in love

-Running a business together as a married couple and not getting a divorce.

-How we come up with our flavors

-The traditions we kept from our childhoods growing up in Brooklyn

-How I went into a month long period of mourning after Bea Arthur died

-This one time when Matt got hit in the balls so hard he started throwing up, and it was the funniest goddamn thing I have ever seen in my entire life

#3: What recipes will you be sharing?

Teeeheehee…..um…what was that? I’m sorry. I was thinking about that time Matt got hit in the balls. (teeheehee). Um…yeah, there’s, um…..oh jeez, you don’t understand!!! He was all like “AAAAAHHHHH! MY BALLS!”.  IT WAS AMAZING.

#4: I see a major book deal hasn’t helped the level of professionalism go up around here.

What are we talking about again?

#5: Cupcakes.

That’s right. Don’t worry, the Chicken n’Waffles one will be in there. I know that’s the only one you really care about.

#6: When will it be released?

Fall 2013! And you’ll be hearing lots about the process of writing the book right here on the Robicelli’s blog. OR I’ll be so exhausted from writing every day that I’ll just post cat pictures for the next 18 months. Really could go either way.

#7: You guys have a title?

We’ve got a title AND a cover!

Book Cover

And what does seeing an image like that do for you? Does it make you hungry? OF COURSE IT DOES! CUPCAKETIME!

Congratulations to Shane O’Neill on winning Spike TV’s Inkmaster!

If you remember, Matt was tattooed by Shane on Inkmaster’s third episode, but we weren’t allowed to talk about the show or his tattoo for contractual secrecy reasons. Now that it’s over, here’s a GIGANTIC photo of Matt’s tattoo!

It’s even more remarkable in person. Trust me - I’ve been waking up to it every day for six months now.  Look at the subtle striations on the Robocoup blade! I mean, that’s just bananas! Seriously, if you ever run into Matt in person, don’t be shy about asking to see this thing. It’s without question the best tattoo I’ve ever seen in my life, and definitely deserves to be enjoyed.

Also, he got our kids names put into it, but didn’t get my name because he claims it’s “bad luck”. At least that’s what he tells me.

In totally unrelated news, last night Matt and I attended the official “Call for Entries” party for the 2012 Food Film Festival! This was one of my favorite food events of last year, so we were thrilled to be able to be a part of it again. Click here to learn more about how you can submit a film!

Now for cupcakes - Chocolate Caramel Pretzel is BACK! This one is one of our most popular ever, so go find out what all the fuss is about!

The results of LogoSearch Round One are in, and your pick was……..

Sketch One

NUMBER ONE with 47% of the vote!!!! Let’s all give it up for Number One, ladies & gentlemen!!!

If you’re wondering where your horse placed, sketch #2 had 19% of the vote, and sketch #3 had 34% of the vote. Good effort guys! Unfortunately, since you lost, you’ll now immediately be deleted from my hard drive and never seen again.

As I mentioned in Monday’s post, a lot of people said the only reason they had voted for #3 was because they liked that it said “Brooklyn”. I mentioned this to Isaac Lubow, our graphic designer, internet treasure and animal lover, and he promptly sent me the following second drafts:

Art Deco Logo

See that?! He listened to your input! What a guy! But then there was this…..

Circle Logo Alone

CIRCLES! This isn’t the original plan! I mean, yes, it’s the same font, but now there’s all the friggin’ circles, and I’m in love with them!!! I’m sort of beginning to get nostalgic for all those past designers who consistently showed me things that I hated and just had to pick the one I could deal with.

And I haven’t even gotten into deciding on colors yet! I’ve had suggestions of dark chocolate brown with blue accents.  Navy and maroon.  Orange and blue, but those are NY Islander colors and I’d rather be slathered with honey and eaten by starving tigers than be reminded of the Islanders. Or Devils. Or Flyers.

A friend of mine has been going on and on and on and on about the colors like if I pick the wrong one, the entire company is going to immediately implode (though she is a marketing executive or something like that. I don’t know- she said it once….I wasn’t really paying attention). She’s been lobbying HARD for the color orange, which to be honest, has never been my favorite. Of course, as an overachieving fellow mother, it’s not enough just to have an argument. She has provided an entire report of cold hard facts on my Facebook page to beat all the other color choices into submission!

“Orange combines the energy of red and the happiness of yellow. It is associated with joy, sunshine, and the tropics. Orange represents enthusiasm, fascination, happiness, creativity, determination, attraction, success, encouragement, and stimulation. (note: I had NO IDEA that all this was going on in color! What else are you compelling me to do, orange?!?!? I’m onto you now, you bastard!!!)

To the human eye, orange is a very hot color, so it gives the sensation of heat. Nevertheless, orange is not as aggressive as red. Orange increases oxygen supply to the brain, produces an invigorating effect, and stimulates mental activity. It is highly accepted among young people. As a citrus color, orange is associated with healthy food and stimulates appetite. Orange is the color of fall and harvest. In heraldry, orange is symbolic of strength and endurance. (note: look up “heraldry” and see if this statement is a reference to porn)

Orange has very high visibility, so you can use it to catch attention and highlight the most important elements of your design. Orange is very effective for promoting food products and toys.” - From ColorWheelPro.com

Me? I don’t know what to think.  Right now, I’m sort of feeling very violated by every color on the wheel. They’re just sitting there, reflecting their rays of light, shooting them straight into my retinas thinking they can manipulate me to do their bidding.

But really, Heather is right.  Picking a color isn’t just about something I like or think looks cool.  This is pure, hard science - the science that ties all of us and everything we see together into one entity.  This is not an occult science. This is not one of those crazy systems of divination and astrology. That stuff’s hooey, and you’ve got to have a screw loose to go in for that sort of thing. This science is fairly commonplace and simple to understand. Humankind is simply materialized color operating on the 49th vibration. You would make that conclusion walking down the street or going to the store.

This week, come join the discussion on Facebook. Isaac and I will be listening to all your ideas and opinions as we go on from this point. And you know what will help you come up with good ideas? CUPCAKES IN YOUR MOUTH.

Clockwise from front: Tiramisu, Bea Arthur, Southern Belle, Oatmeal Cream Pie

Tiramisu: Espresso soaked cake, espresso ganache, mascarpone buttercream, cocoa powder

Bea Arthur: Black coffee chocolate cake, cheesecake buttercream, espresso ganache

Southern Belle: Banana cake, vanilla buttercream, brown butter bourbon glazed pecans

Oatmeal Cream Pie: Brown sugar oat cake, marshmallow buttercream, oat crisp

IT’S FRIDAY THE 13TH!!!!  EVERYONE START FREAKING OUT ABOUT SOMETHING!!! HOW ABOUT THE MAYANS? DOES THAT SOUND GOOD TO EVERYONE?

Listen, the end of the world could happen today, or on any one of the THREE FRIDAY THE 13THS THAT ARE GOING TO HAPPEN THIS YEAR BECAUSE IT’S OBVIOUSLY THE END OF DAYS (it’s on Wikipedia so it’s legit).  I still busted my ass today making the magic happen. Booked a few weddings for this year for people who have decided to throw caution to the wind and continue living their lives.  Also planned out some really cool stuff I’m itching you tell you about, but have to wait until the final copy is edited.  And also locked up a new client that I can’t announce til Monday.

I know you guys hate Tumblrs like this where I’m all “Nyah nyah nyah, I know something you don’t know!”, but I’ve really got nothing else right now besides a bunch of tentative stuff in the pipeline and the whole end of the world thing.  Sorry. If you want straight up entertainment, go watch Pizza Boomerang. But if you just want mindless drivel, well then, you’re in the right place!

I also pretty much used up all my creativity today well in advance of this post.  I spent the bulk of the day working at my favorite cafe (and Robicelli’s client) Hom writing an article for a website that asked me to do it a little while ago (last summer).  I also finally put a tab up that links to some of my writing around the intertubes, and was thinking of listing some memorable blog posts as well.  If there’s anything you have found particularly memorable, go tell me on Facebook, as I’m always doing these things at 2am and really don’t know what’s going on here half the time.

And what was Matt doing while I was busy busting my ass in a gorgeous secret cafe drinking buckets of coffee? Well, he was making cupcakes.  So you should probably go eat one so he feels like he accomplished something, too.

It’s a good news/bad news day.  Just going to get to it.

The bad news is that we’re cancelling some of our dates for our Park Here pop-up, meaning there’s no place to pick up individual Chicken n’Waffles/Buffalo/etc cupcakes during most of the playoff games, and you need to order them for delivery.  Reason? We just have a TON of back-end stuff to do.  Not stuff that would make an interesting Tumblr. The kind of stuff that makes me go dark on Twitter, get headaches, and stare at a computer screen until I’m compelled to cover myself in warpaint and sit in the middle of my living room floor butt naked while eating a tub of ice cream with my bare hands.  You’ve all been there (right?).

The good news? I’m hoping that there will be a ton of it once all this paperwork gets done.  Namely, ALL MY PAPERWORK WILL BE DONE.  But primarily, I have done almost no work whatsover on the forthcoming Robicelli’s Cookbook since right before the Union Square Holiday Market started, and that thing ain’t going to write itself (I checked- it hasn’t done a damn thing on it’s own in my absence. Lousy slacker book proposal).

Other good news? Valentine’s ordering is now open!

AWWWWWW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

For only fifty dollars, you can send your loved one 12 very special Robicelli’s cupcakes or brownies, tied up with a beautiful ribbon with a personalized handwritten card attached, and hand delivered right to their home or office.  We’ll even have the delivery guy wear a tie so he’s extra good looking (though not as good looking as you).

I know it seems like New Years was just yesterday & V-Day is more than a month away, and you’re already sort of freaking out that Duane Reade etc is already stocking their shelves with Valentine’s candy and shoving the entire thing down your throats.  Totally get it.  However, I had to put it up now because it’s one of our two busiest days of the year, mostly because for one day we drop our delivery minimum to only one dozen, and we can only make a limited amount of deliveries as we don’t yet have a cloning device or one of those gizmos from Clockstoppers that would allow us to move superquick through time and make more stops in the Robicellimobile.  Last year we opened ordering on 2/1 and got to capacity really quickly, so we wanted to give everyone a bit more time.  We care like that.

Next bit of good news- realized that Lunar New Year comes a tad early this year, so we’ve changed the cupcake schedule a bit for this month- Green Tea Mandarin AND Black Sesame will both be available on January 23rd! Keung hei fat choi NYC!

And final piece of good news- NEW CUPCAKE! Oatmeal cream pie! Go git!

Clockwise from front: Oatmeal Cream Pie, Liddabit, Banana Cream Pie, Car Bomb

NEW! Oatmeal Cream Pie: Brown sugar oat cake, vanilla buttercream, oat crisp

Liddabit: Chocolate cake, salted caramel nougat buttercream, roasted peanuts, caramel, ganache

Banana Cream Pie: Banana cake, vanilla pudding, vanilla custard buttercream, banana chip, graham cracker crumbs

Car Bomb: Chocolate Guinness stout cake, Jameson whiskey ganache, Bailey’s Irish Cream buttercream

Available at:

Hom: Third Ave & 88th Street, Bay Ridge

Tazza Cafes: Henry St off Atlantic AND Clark St off Henry, Brooklyn Heights

Battery Place Market: 77 Battery Place, Battery Park City
