I forgot to write the Tumblr on Tuesday (sorry). And by forgot, I mean I fell asleep on the couch. I’ve been kinda crazy busy lately. To make it up to you, here’s a post with 10,000 links! Ok, maybe that’s not making it up to you, but I’ve just got a ton of stuff to talk about today, and besides I could pretty easily blow a good 20 to 30 minutes of your productivity with all of this. Fortunately, it’s Friday AND we’re into the holidays now, so it’s not like you really have to pay attention to your job or anything. Ten bucks says a solid third of you guys are showing up drunk to work already.

Tuesday I spent the day talking to the most amazing kids I’ve met in a long time- the third grade at the world famous PS 22 in Staten Island. You’ve seen their chorus on the Oscars, Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, Oprah and more…..and here they are with Matt Damon!

My BFF Peter Shankman invited me to tag along with him to speak about what it’s like to be an entrepreneur. I thought I’d be the cool kid in class who owns a freaking CUPCAKE FACTORY, but of course, Peter brought along video of himself jumping out of an airplane because he’s essentially the entire world’s awesomely crazy uncle. Peter Shankman 1, me 0. Of course, there will be a day where outcrazy Peter and win the love of children all over the globe. (side note, if anyone out there with a video camera has access to a cheetah, a zeppelin, and 10,000 ping pong balls, get in touch with me)

I’ve been busy working at and behind the scenes at the Bay Ridge Cares Kitchen (BRiCK). Serious Eats has been hanging out with us a bit and wrote this really great piece about our team. We seriously have the best people ever working there.

And speaking of Serious Eats- they named us one of their “Best Sweets We Ate In November”! We won an entire month! Why don’t you go take a look at what we’re doing in December, which is going to be just as, if not MORE amazing. You bring some of those to a holiday party, everyone is going to want to go home with you.

While we’re on the topic of holiday parties, now’s as good of a time as any to mention that we’re a week away from Hanukkah, meaning we’re a week away from….

The Blatt

THE BLATT! Our once a year classic that imagines what would happen if a cheesecake made sweet sweet love to a jelly donut. This one is obsessed over by many, yet only available for eight crazy nights. Want to make sure they, or any of our other delicious creations, are at your party next weekend? Hanukkah ordering is finally up to make that happen- just note that we need at least 2 days to process orders, so get yours in ASAP!

You may also have noticed that we haven’t announced our Christmas flavors yet, and with good reason: we haven’t decided what they are yet. We have just so many amazing ones, and it gets harder and harder to pick every year. So what do we do when we have to make tough choices? Easy- we make you do it. Head on over to our Facebook page and vote- your answers will determine what you’re cramming in your piehole on the happiest day of the year (it sounds so much more appetizing when you say “cram in your piehole, yes?).

And now for one final item for you to click on to get you in the holiday mood: Emmett Otter’s Jugband Christmas:

AWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!!

Now go eat some cupcakes. The holidays are ON, people!

Funky Monkey: Banana chocolate chip cake, peanut butter buttercream, banana chip, ganache

Eggnog: Eggnog cake, eggnog buttercream, fresh grated nutmeg

Chocolate Orange: Chocolate orange cake and buttercream, hand candied orange peel

Last appearance til next fall! Pumpkin Pie: Pumpkin cake, vanilla buttercream, crushed homemade all-butter pie dough

I only have five more days to harass you about Thanksgiving ordering! You know I wait all year for these precious moments to nag you, in the honored tradition of my grandmother and many generations of Sicilian women before her.

In this vein, I thought I’d take a picture of my nagging face, but I’m exhausted and look like crap today. So I Googled an image of “nagging”, and found this:

.

…..and then this….

….then this…..

and finally….THIS.

I’ve learned two things tonight:

1. I will wear people down quicker if I throw my hands in the air, and wave them like I just don’t care (or DO I?!?!)

2. If you don’t place a Thanksgiving order, Gordon Ramsey will come to your house and eat your soul.

I don’t know about you, but I’m pretty scared right now. So, um, order and stay safe, people. And keep one eye open in case Gordon Ramsey comes to kill us all.

Butternut Spice: Butternut squash cake, vanilla buttercream, candied spiced pumpkin seeds, butternut squash seed oil

Pear Mascarpone: Pear cake, mascarpone buttercream, pear chip

The Siobhan: Chocolate cake, bourbon butterscotch buttercream, bourbon butterscotch drizzle, chocolate chips

Pumpkin Pie: Pumpkin cake, vanilla buttercream, crushed all-butter pie dough

By now, many of you know by now that Matt and I have been actively involved in the relief effort, through either our Twitter or the articles on Serious Eats or Brooklyn MagazineThis past week we’ve made some huge progress with our efforts- co-founding the Bay Ridge Cares kitchen at St. Mary’s with some of our neighbors in Bay Ridge, and working with the member of Occupy Sandy to get the hot food we prepare directly to people in the worst hit, utterly neglected neighborhoods in Brooklyn.

Here’s two ways you can help us:

1. We are seeking skilled chefs to work as supervisors in our kitchen. You need to commit to at least one full 9-5 shift a week where you will be in charge of a staff of volunteers, making an undetermined amount of food with no set menu out of whatever ingredients we’ve managed to have donated - AND it has to be nutritious, filling, and not simply baked pasta (everyone’s been saying no more baked zitis- they’re doing a lot of heavy lifting, so heavy food and the carbs make them sluggish).

It’s just like being on one of those wacky Food Network shows- except that it’s not pointless, and you can’t call yourself a “celebrity chef” once you’re done. Or maybe you can- I’m really not sure who’s dealing out the celebrity chef cards nowadays, but I can probably make some calls.

Also, contestants on Wheel of Fortune are now called “Celebrity Spellers”

If you’re interested, shoot me an email with a little bit about yourself to allison@robicellis.com, subject line “St. Mary’s Chef”, and I’ll put you on the schedule!

2. Our kitchens ingredients will be entirely sourced by donations and contributions. If you’d like to donate food, you can bring bring it to us Monday-Saturday 9-5 at:  St. Mary’s Church, corner of 81st Street & Ridge Boulevard, Bay Ridge, Brooklyn.

I’ve made a shopping list for donations, only to make sure that we end up with healthy foods we can actually cook large amounts of food with and not just random cans of Spaghetti-O’s and Crab Juice. You can find it posted on our Bay Ridge Cares Facebook page.

If you’d like to donate but can’t deal with the whole shopping and schlepping down to Bay Ridge thing, we’re also asking for donations of Costco and American Express gift cards. Those can be mailed to: Bay Ridge Cares, c/o City Councilman Vincent Gentile, 8703 Third Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11209.

And now that we’ve addressed that, we’re going to get back to normal.

It’s been a very rough two weeks for us both emotionally and financially as we recover from Sandy. Matt and I are working our asses off to help the people of our hometown, we are hustling to keep our business not only open but growing, and though right now it feels like things may never be normal again, we need to start acting like everything is fine if we are ever going to heal.

We’re from Brooklyn, damnit. You honestly don’t think we’re going to get kicked in the gut, then just sit around and be scared all the time, did you?

You tell ‘em, sexy dog!

So here’s the deal: as of this very minute, I am going back to being an unrelenting idiot both here and on Twitter. I’ll still send out Sandy info when I feel it’s appropriate  but for the most I’m stepping off my soapbox and going back to being Allison Robicelli, back to talking about baked goods and Full House reruns and whatever other crap you guys are used to me talking about.

We haven’t forgotten. We’re still helping people every day, still worried about our town. But we can’t save Brooklyn unless we all get back to work, and bust our asses to keep small businesses and jobs alive. And a very, VERY important part of my job is making an ass of myself on the internet.

It’s also my job to remind you all that Thanksgiving is now less than two weeks away, so you may want to order some cupcakes and etc. ASAP so you can relax and know that your family will totally like you better than whoever brought something lame like creamed onions. I mean, I love creamed onions just as much as the next guy, but really- Robicelli’s cupcakes, or creamed onions? Who’s winning that one? Everyone is going to be leaving dinner talking about how great you are, while your second cousin can go back home with their half eaten cold onions and sulk about how they lost at Thanksgiving.

This is normal family behavior during holidays, right? Not just mine?

And in case you’re still on the fence about ordering, maybe you should head out today and find yourself one of these puppies right here. I’m eating one right now, plotting how I can beat my family straight through Christmas. No more locking myself in a bathroom crying THIS year over passive aggressive comments about my appearance! Revenge will be mine, and it will be covered in buttercream and ganache! WHO LOOKS LIKE TOTAL CRAP LIKE THEY HAVEN’T SLEPT IN SIX MONTHS NOW, AUNT SARA?!?!?!

Clockwise from front: Bea Arthur, Pumpkin Pie, The Siobhan, Tarte Bourdaloue

The Siobhan (formerly known as Bourbon Butterscotch): Chocolate cake, bourbon butterscotch buttercream, bourbon butterscotch drizzle, chocolate chips

Pumpkin Pie: Pumpkin cake, vanilla buttercream, crushed all-butter pie dough

Bea Arthur: Black coffee chocolate cake, cheesecake buttercream, espresso ganache

Tarte Bourdalou: Pear cake, almond buttercream, white wine poached pear, roasted almond

I have now been inside for two whole freaking weeks.

Yep.

So, erm- what’s the weather been like? Is it nice outside? It’s been nice in here too. My mom sent over a pair of fleece sweatpant that are super comfortable, and I’ve been wearing them for a few days now.

They’re, um, you know, really great.

Let’s see…….hmmmmm…….oh! I caught up on a whole bunch of tv shows that I haven’t had time to watch for years, like Damages and RuPaul’s Drag Race. Kinda sucks though because everyone else has already seen them, so I can’t really go on Facebook and talk about my reactions and feelings with other people. My cats watch with me, but I’m totally not at that stage of cabin fever where they can talk.

Yet.

I’m writing a lot, which is good. This time next year the book will be out, and I’ll hopefully be on tour somewhere. I hope I get to go to Pittsburgh, because I was there once ten years ago and I really liked it. I remember grabbing lunch at a ChiChi’s where my waitress decided she needed to sit with me because she was really impressed that I was from Brooklyn, and in exchange for me telling her all about what it was like to live there, she told me about her methadone addiction. I had a chimichanga. Is that a real Spanish word? Chimichanga? I think the more I say it, the more made up it sounds. “Chimichanga”. CHIMMEY-CHON-GAAAAHHHH.

I bought a new shirt, too! Off the internet! It’s really nice. I’m looking forward to wearing in a week or so when I’m off my major bedrest.

*sigh*

Guys- go outside today and ENJOY THE CRAP OUT OF IT. Because you don’t understand how lucky you are to do such simple, stupid things- like going to the grocery store to get an avocado, or ridiculous stupid minutia that I totally miss.

One more week. One more week and I’m going to be up and out of bed. I’m going to go buy an avocado, go have a latte, then maybe hit the post office and mail the f**k out of some letters. It’s going to be amazing.

Now plot about how you’re going to leave your desk today and go get yourself a brownie, or a whoopie pie, or one of these cupcakes. And really enjoy every single second of today, because, well, it’s only going to be today once!

For the second year in a row, a film about little old us has become an official selection at the prestigious NYC Food Film Festival! This time last year I was telling you how amazing it was- getting to watch short films about food while actually EATING the food- and how you needed to get tickets ASAP. This year….

You’re already out of luck. Hopefully it’s because you all remembered my notes from last year and already got your tickets!
I’m completely bummed that I personally won’t be there to hang out with the audience and stuff my face, but Matt will still be there handling the Q&A and representing Robicelli’s alongside Alison Grasso, the filmmaker behind “Bklynography”.  She asked us to take her on a tour of a few of some of our favorite places to eat and shop in our neck of Brooklyn so she could film it, and we were stoked not only to hang out with her, but also to eat 7 times in one day between 8am and noon. Because we’re professionals and that’s how we do things.
Since this Saturday is absolutely monumental for her as it marks her film festival debut, I thought it would be fun to subject Alison to her very first interview and learn about what inspired her to make the film, what makes her tick, and pick her brain about movies. Here we go!

Why did you move to Brooklyn?
I moved to Brooklyn in August of 2008 after I graduated from NYU. Mainly I looked to Brooklyn because Manhattan was muy expensivo, especially when you’re a poor post-college kid. I had visited a friend who moved to Boerum Hill a few months earlier and really loved the neighborhood - its bars, restaurants, and general “main street” small town community feeling. I knew I could get more for my money in Brooklyn. And it’s like it had all the amenities and perks of Manhattan, like 24hr bodegas (for drunk shopping) and great subway accessibility (for drunk transporting) but with way fewer tourists, more small, local businesses, and just a more homey sort of feeling.

When I was finishing college, I lived in an apartment in Chelsea, and while it was a great neighborhood, my bedroom was about the size of  large closet (complete with sliding pocket door), our “kitchen” was a very narrow hallway, and the constant bustle made me feel a little strung out. Our “landlord” was a giant management company that was difficult to deal with and the rent was “just too damn high” to continue on that way, even if Jack McBrayer DID live around the corner (he did.) Now I go back to that neighborhood and what few unusual places that were there when I moved out are mostly gone - I don’t know why I’m still surprised when everything turns into a Duane Reade/Starbucks/American Apparel/Bank of America but it’s somehow disheartening nonetheless.
What made you start Bklynography?

Brooklyn is awesome, mostly. I love my neighborhood and community, and more than that, I feel really grateful to be a part of it. Giant corporations swallow up small businesses all the time, which is tragic to me. I wouldn’t be able to handle living in a suburban strip mall town where everything is the same, mile after mile. Not everyone has access to Sweet Potato Casserole cupcakes and locally brewed beers and artisanal mayonnaises, let alone the interesting, engaging, and unique people who create them. And there’s always something different going on in Brooklyn - between flea markets, and Guacfests and concerts and outdoor movies and Chili takedowns and dance parties - it’s almost too much to take in. I want other people to know how wonderful Brooklyn is, especially my college friends who are holding out in Manhattan on the Upper East Side. Would you freakin move already?! Actually don’t do that you’re gonna make the rent go up.
What drew you to film?
I started doing analog photography my sophomore year in high school. That same year, I first became aware of film as a potential job thing that people can do. My brother plays traditional Irish music (primarily the uilleann pipes [it’s an Irish bagpipe that is significantly less horrible than the Scottish bagpipes]) and when I was in high school he got hired to play on the set of a movie called Gods & Generals. It was the sequel to Gettysburg. Jeff Daniels was in it, I’m pretty sure. Anyway I begged my mom if I could take the day off school and go with him and my dad to the set, and she agreed. It was awesome. It was like traveling back in time to the Civil War, except dudes were sitting around eating Doritos in confederate uniforms. Basically I just hung around and watched everything and decided, “This is a job where you can wear whatever you want to work. I want this job.” We met Jeff Daniels’ stunt double and saw guys manipulating horses’ legs out of camera frame. It was the greatest day of my young life* (til I got to college and had my picture taken with Mo Rocca in Washington Square Park one time).

What are you doing now?
Originally I wanted to be a director of photography, but I decided that set life wasn’t for me - too much heavy lifting and long, long hours. Plus, the crippling anxiety! I also really liked editing so I chose that. Editing has an “undo” button most of the time which I like.

So now, I am an assistant editor at a commercial post-production facility. I get to work on commercials for things like Dairy Queen, AND I still get wear whatever I want to work. In my spare time, I shoot photos and make videos of my own, and try desperately to find time to go to the post office. I run Brooklynography, which, unfortunately, has been a bit defunct lately as I’ve been busy with other projects on the side. I also spend a lot of time seeking out cool new things, eating delicious stuff, and playing with my new puppy Igby.

Can you explain “Mullholland Drive” to me? Because I still don’t get it.
I’ve never seen Mullholland Drive and based on its description on Netflix Instant I refuse to watch it.
What about Kristen Stewart? I don’t get that, either.

I’m not sure if I “get” her. I appreciate that she isn’t Taylor Swift though. That is refreshing about her. Also I don’t think the slut-shaming was fair. We all make mistakes, Kristen!!

What’s up next for you?
Next? I don’t know! Maybe some photo projects? I’d like to take an awesome trip somewhere cool and far away. I’d like to live in Paris for a while (and start a short-lived spin-off project, Parisography.) I’d like to invest in camera stabilization equipment. This was meant to be a wishlist, right?

Say something nice about me, because its my blog and I call the shots around here. Also, I have your puppy.
Allison Robicelli is my muse, even though her name has an extra L that is completely superfluous. I don’t remember how I found out about their cupcakes, it was probably through Fucked In Park Slope, but this product changed my life. It’s sort of sickening that I’m the kind of frail personality whose life can be upended by a baked good, but whatever. Robicelli’s represents everything good in a food business. Their flavors always change. They’re seasonal, they’re exciting, they’re different. It’s something to chase and look forward to. In my opinion, stagnation is sort of what kills a business. Once it’s predictable and boring, I’m not interested anymore. If I can get it any day, then why do I need to get it today!?
On top of making a super great product, Allison and Matt are the sort of friendly, outgoing, inspiring business owners who make a community what it is. And they don’t have some intern sitting behind the twitter, Allison pushes the buttons and stays in touch with a number of people I cannot even imagine. They personally work events where they’re selling their product! I’m pretty sure Matt and Allison have clone versions of themselves because I don’t know how they can do so much all the damn time. They care about their community and their customers and their family, and that is goddamn beautiful. Plus they give me free cupcakes sometimes.

PS: I’m from Maryland, nothing cool or exciting ever happens there.

…………………………………………………………………………………….

I’m you’re muse! Oh, you’re just too much, Alison with your freakish “one L” in your name! Too much indeed!

Now go buy a cupcake or some whoopie pies or something and get yourself super stoked for Saturday!

At this time two years ago Matt and I were broke, almost homeless and begging for food.  We had two clients, Hom and Blue Apron, and were selling maybe 120 cupcakes on a good week.  That Christmas, I had to ask my mom for money so I would be able to buy presents for my family.  My parents would send over leftover food so we never went hungry, and never made it seem like charity.  My extended family, who owns the building we live in, allowed us to stay rent-free until we could get back on our feet.

This Thanksgiving, we are back on our feet.  We have a new store. We are working on a book.  We’ve in stores through Brooklyn, Manhattan and Long Island.  We are making jobs for this country. And we are growing faster than we can keep up sometimes.

I am incredibly thankful for my parents, who even though it pained them to watch me go to hell and back, stood behind me and supported us 100% every step of the way.  If it wasn’t for them, this company wouldn’t function.  They are always there when we need them, helping raise our kids, backing us up when we need help being in six places at the same time, letting us sleep on their floor when our apartment floods (only twice this year!), and still making sure we eat well (we’re Italian- it’s what we do).

I am thankful for all the people who have helped us believe in ourselves, lent us a hand so we could keep going, gave us an “in” where they could, and sat there and listened during every nervous breakdown and panic attack I’ve had.

I am thankful my children still love me, even though we are not typical parents, and we don’t live a typical life.  I am thankful they are turning out to be such amazing little boys, no doubt thanks not only to Matt and myself, but the vast number of people who pitch in to help raise them on a daily basis.

I am thankful to Matt for staying married to me, because I know that I’m nuts and a pain in the ass, but he still loves me.  He also makes me laugh harder than anyone on earth, challenges me as a chef and a human being, and is pretty much the best dad in the whole wide world.  I never for a second forget just how lucky I am.

And most of all, I am thankful for YOU. Because you guys are our everything.  Seriously.  You have been supporting us, rooting for us, inspiring us and making us believe we could do this since day one.  We want to be the best at what we do because you deserve nothing but the best- I don’t think we’ll ever stop being in awe of the fact that people are fanatical about the food that we make.  It is a gigantic honor to be allowed to feed someone, and we are humbled by it.

We love you guys so much. Happy Thanksgiving.

Well we’re here- the first day in a good long while where I will not be nagging you about Thanksgiving ordering, because now that window has closed.  But fear not!  In only a few short days, I shall be harassing you incessantly about holiday ordering!

If there’s one thing Sicilian-blooded women are really good at doing, it’s nagging. I’m really just making my ancestors proud- I can’t help it.

We had a FANTASTIC opening weekend at Union Square, and loved seeing so many friendly faces return (especially all our friends from Madison Square Eats whom we’ve missed so much!).  However, the downside to these markets for me is that as much as I love seeing all of you, I REALLY miss my kids.  And they apparently have missed me too, because they’re in bed with me right now and won’t leave, and I feel too guilty to kick them out.  I’m trying to explain to them about how I really DO need to work right now, and they want to help so I can get done earlier so we can get back to cuddling (how do I say no to logic like that?).

So without further adieu, here is Toby’s first contribution to the Robicelli’s blog!

oooooooooo

ssss

Toby Beckett Robicelli ladies and gentlemen!  Only three years old and still writes a better Tumblr than I do half the time (and much better than the one I let the cat do).  He’ll be running this company one day!

Now to run and get to cuddling.  But first, here’s the flavors, and what do you know it’s the Thanksgiving ones!  That’s right, we know how many of you are the last minute types, or the renegades who are all “I don’t need to preorder- I live on the edge! I take my chances when it comes to things like dessert!”.  We know you better than you know yourself sometimes, don’t we.

To ensure you all get what you need this week, the entire Thanksgiving menu will be available Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday at all our locations (plus some extras at Union & DeKalb).  Thanksgiving isn’t a time for recklessness.  It’s a time for calories and napping.

And for thanks…..that too.

It’s only a few short weeks until Halloween, and only one until the Fall Fest at DeKalb Market! One of my initial mistakes as a mother was making the vow long ago that I would never buy costumes, but rather be resourceful and patch them together myself like we did when we were kids.  Then last year I sort of spazzed on Halloween and waited til the the last minute, which is why Toby ended up going trick or treating dressed as the dude from the Spin Doctors.

Toby Spin Dr Edit

You thought I was kidding, didn’t you.

This year, however, I wasn’t making the same mistake! We went to our local abandoned store turned Halloween shop and bought costumes loooong before they sold out and the kids ended up having to be the guy from Soul Asylum this year.

Atticus is going to be Finn McMissle from Cars 2, and Toby’s going to be Thomas the Tank Engine. And they both look SUPER adorable!  Once they were done picking out their costumes, I went over to the grownup section to look for myself.  Should I be a unicorn? We all know how much I love unicorns.

Hmmmm…..I’ve never seen a unicorn in person, but I’m pretty sure they’re not supposed to look like that.  Maybe I’m wrong, who knows!  But I just have a little too much self esteem to be pulling that off.  Ummm…oh, I know! How about Snow White! My kids love that movie! Yeah- I’ll dress up like Snow White and go trick or treating with them!

Waaaiiiit a second…..I don’t remember that from the movie. Maybe in the sake of modesty, I should go for something a little more masculine? Maybe a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle?

Ok, this is ridiculous. I watched TMNT religiously when I was a kid, and I don’t remember Donatello wearing thigh high boots ONCE.

I’m just going to do the OPPOSITE of Halloween convention and go as a nun.

Oh son of a BITCH!!!!

You know what? I’m NOT dressing up now. Eff this.  Men are allowed to dress up like Dracula, or Waldo, or Elvis, and you know what all those guys have in common? THEY’RE ALL WEARING PANTS.  Matt can dress up for Halloween. I’m done.

Motherfu…….

Today we’re releasing TWO new flavors, because we only have a limited amount of time in which we can do our fall flavors, and we think of new ideas faster than we can make them.

And yes, FALL flavors. I don’t care if it’s 90 freaking degrees outside.  I’ve been wearing a scarf and hat all week just out of principle.  If I could take a stand against Matt with the pajama jeans, I certainly can take a stand against Indian Summers as well with neckwear.  You hear me, fall!  No more of this crap! I demand at least 70% more crisp breezes!

Now to our new flavors, Pumpkin Pie and Tarte Bourdaloue.  The first, well, you all know what pumpkin pie is.  The second has been on Matt’s list for a long while- Tarte Bourdaloue is a classical French tart that was the first thing he ever learned to make in pastry school (I believe he also made it when he was the Bread/Pastry Chef at Lutece).  We know a lot of people haven’t heard of it, but by golly EVERYONE has heard of cupcakes, so we hope by cross-pollinating it’ll make you want to go and seek out a proper one, or perhaps try your hand at making one yourself.  It is insanely, insanely delicious.

And also, everyone said that pie was the new cupcake, but we’ve turned pie into cupcakes! Who’s laughing now, pie?!?!?!? WHO’S LAUGHING NOW?!?!?!?!?

And look at the location list for today- there’s a new one in there, in TriBeCa!
