Remember a few months back when we planned a one day lecture/pop-up shop out east in Quogue, but then a few days before we were supposed to go out it seemed like it was going to snow, and the The Weather Channel started going “AAAAHHHHHHH IT’S A BLIZZARPOCOLYPSE AND WE’RE ALL GOING TO DIE!”, we were were all “NOOOOOO!!!” and cancelled our pop-up, and then everyone went to Costco and bought all the potato chips and bottled water they could and we stayed home waiting for the end, and then it snowed like 4 inches?

And that’s the story of how Costco was out of Cool Ranch Doritos for four whole days and it totally ruined Crainium night at our house.

Point is we weren’t just going to up and cancel on the good people of Quogue, so we reschedueled for a date where we were (almost) certain there would be no snow - and that date is this coming Sunday!

If you’re interested in coming down, you’ll need to register first, as there’s limited space in our venue, the Quogue Library.  If you’re from Long Island and have yet to visit the Quogue Library, this is a perfect excuse to go- it’s been rated one of the top 10 libraries in the entire country, it’s got a tiny one room schoolhouse from the 18th century on the grounds, and you’ll get to watch me running around the grounds for about three hours flipping my crap over all the historical architecture, because I am so, so lame.

Now for the baked goods that are going to stores in the right now in New York City. We forgot to take a picture of the cupcakes today, so instead enjoy this image of a young Scott Baio in teeny tiny white shorts. Happy Monday!

Turtle: Chocolate cake, salted caramel buttercream, roasted pecans, caramel and ganache drizzle

Cinnamon Bun: Cinnamon spotted cake, cream cheese buttercream, cinnamon butterscotch, streusel

Coconut Custard: Coconut cake, vanilla custard buttercream roasted coconut

Banana Cream Pie: Banana cake, vanilla custard, custard buttercream, banana chip, graham cracker crumbs

Well, the holidays are over, we are back in “ordinary time”, and our cookbook is due into Penguin/Viking Studio in 11 days! NOT STRESSED OUT! EVERYTHING’S FINE!

I have never been this crazy in January in my life. This is supposed to be the “holiday season for the service industry”, the four weeks where business is glacially slow, where we get to see friends, take day trips, and calm our asses down just a tad. And we are scaling it back in the kitchen a bit- until Valentine’s Day, we’re cancelling Wednesday cupcake deliveries, and will only be sending them to stores Monday and Fridays (this doesn’t apply to Queen City Cupcakes out in Patchogue, who gets their own schedule because they’re special).  This is also because we’ve gotten so busy with brownies, whoopie pies, loaf cakes and hot cocoa we need a lot more time to produce them, so our online store remains completely and totally open.

Also because I’m pretty sure the book is trying to kill me. Seriously. My vision is blurry from doing so many fractions and I got a really nasty papercut today. If anything happens to me, the book did it. It’s also being released on October 17th, so mark your calendars!

To get yourself excited for it, go have some of these cupcakes today- they’re all in the book!

Tumblr is brief today because I’m setting up a kitchen down in Bay Ridge to feel people in lesser-known areas affected by Hurricane Sandy. Can’t get much into it because I am literally dealing with hundreds of emails each day, and feel like I’m not actually getting anything done because I spend all my time reading emails.

Going to get there, though! No way I’m letting people go hungry on my watch. Then as soon as I get myself organized, I’m going to get the Thanksgiving ordering up so that you guys won’t be without dessert in two weeks! Super duper promise!

In the interim- don’t go hungry right now! Go eat these! Note that our planned rotation went out the window this week because our suppliers are also clawing their way out of the Sandy fiasco, so we’re doing what we can with what we have. Fortunately, when that happens we’re still amazing.

Plus we’re lucky we’ve still got access to things like chocolate and pecans, and not things like crab juice and rocks. I mean, we’re good, but not that good.

Clockwise from front: Sweet Potato Pie, Chocolate Pumpkin Cheesecake, Turtle, Tres Leches

Chocolate Pumpkin Cheesecake: Pumpkin cake, cheesecake buttercream, chocolate fudge

It’s another one of those “I’ve been working on so many super incredibly awesome things that I’m not yet at liberty to talk about, but when you guys find out about them you’re going to be marginally excited because, let’s face it, there’s only so excited you can actually get about a bakery, I mean it’s not like we’re making talking dogs, and let me tell you THAT is something that I think we can all get behind and get super excited about, but back to the point I’m going to get really excited about them because it’s my company that’s I deal with 24 hours a day, and you’ll all be like ‘Wow, that’s pretty awesome news!’ for like three seconds and then go back to looking at Pinterest (or porn)” days!

As you can imagine, it’s very difficult for me to write Tumblr posts when I’m busting at the seams with news I can’t totally announce for super-duper-realz yet, so I’m going to fill this post with “Lite News”. Pretty much stuff you already know, but I’m just going to remind you about. Though heads up- to make all this secret magic stuff happen I’ve been skimping on the sleep, and therefore am so shot that I don’t know how to make it thrillingly exciting enough for a Friday post. In consolation, here’s a picture of an eggplant that looks like Richard Nixon to get your adrenaline pumping:

That was enjoyable, wasn’t it?

Rosh Hashana begins on Sunday night, and the last day you can get your orders in for our special L’Shanah Tovah cupcake (plus others) or Pomegranate Walnut brownie is TODAY. We’re delivering on Sunday afternoon after 3pm, pick-ups will be available at Robicelli’s at Gourmet Guild by early evening.

If you’re looking to place an order for a party next month- the entire October schedule is already up. You may notice that even though we’re known for releasing new flavors relatively regularly, we’re pretty much not doing that at all this fall. We just have so many seasonal flavors we love- including Matt’s favorite (Pecan Pie) and mine (Butternut Spice)- and such a limited time to release them all (til Thanksgiving), that we’re putting a hold on our MASSIVE development list (because seriously, there’s a good amount of flavors still on deck)(also we’re skimping on new flavors- but NOT on parenthesis. We’re still chock full of those).  Maybe next year we’ll release a few, but this year? You guys need more opportunities to make love to Tarte Bourdelou and Sweet Potato Casserole and all those other good ones that came and went so quickly last year.

You know, it just occurred to me- what if that eggplant really was Richard Nixon? Like, one minute you’re the President of the United States, then you’re publicly disgraced, and next thing you know you get reincarnated as an eggplant and end up in some guys hero covered in tomato sauce and mozzarella.  What if this happens to all the Presidents?!?!?! Is anyone out there on the internet looking into this? (ok- it’s officially time for me to shut the laptop and get some sleep)(or it’s time to stay up all night looking for corn on the cob that looks like Gerald Ford)

Clockwise from front: Bourbon Caramel Apple, Turtle, Pumpkin Spice Latte, Tiramisu

Bourbon Caramel Apple: Apple cake, bourbon salted caramel buttercream, roasted apple, bourbon caramel salt

Turtle: Chocolate cake, salted caramel buttercream, roasted pecans, ganache, salted caramel buttercream

Pumpkin Spice Latte: Pumpkin cake, espresso mascarpone buttercream, crushed chocolate covered espresso beans

Tiramisu: Espresso soaked cake, espresso ganache, mascarpone buttercream, cocoa powder

I wanted to write a really awesome post today (I actually had a real topic an everything!), but I am having a very bad Mommy day.

For those of you who don’t have kids, I’ll explain. I am not a monster. I love my kids more than just about any mother ever has. But there are some days where they will just not shut the f*** up and I want to sell them to the circus.

It started with them earlier this evening deciding that they were both Pokemon. As Pokemon are wont to do, they smacked the crap out of each other for an hour straight. In case you don’t know this fun fact: Pokemon can’t speak English- the only word they can only say their name. So this has been just about every conversation today:

Me: Kids, what do you want for dinner?

Atticus (age 5): Sandshrew! Sandshrew sandshrew sandshrew. Sandshrew sandshrew.

Toby (3 1/2): Pika pika! PikaCHUUUUUUU!!!!

Atticus: Sandshrew sandshrew sandshrew. Sandshrew sandshrew!

Me: Um, does that mean tacos?

Atticus: SANDSHREW!

Note that this is particularly adorable in the cartoons because this is what Sandshrew looks like. Atticus is pretty cute himself, but not cute enough to pull off saying the word “Sandshrew” about 2,500 times in an hour.

Then he passed out. Two glorious hours without that word! However, during that time Toby decided to talk pretty much nonstop about I don’t know what because after about 30 seconds everything he said sounded like the whirling of a drill bit boring itself straight into the center of my brain and I stopped listening.

I don’t even get to count the silencing nap as a win, because it’s now 1am and Atticus is awake, asking when I’m getting off the computer so he can look up “Snuffle” on Bulbapedia, which is, you guessed it, the #1 source for Pokemon information on the internet. They are both in my bed, meaning that I will be spending  the night sleeping on the couch.

Why don’t I just move him out of my bed, you ask? Because my children know how to get up in the middle of the night, and in a deep sleep navigate flawlessly from their beds to mine. Mind you, they have set up a virtual minefield of Legos and assorted pointy plastic objects that Matt and I painfully step on every morning, which I swear is more effective in waking one up than coffee.  Back to the point, the children will step OVER the Legos, OVER the Angry Birds figures and plastic dinosaurs, find our bed in the dark, climb into it and sleep on top of me like a mattress.  Because that’s obviously in the job description: cook, maid, chauffeur, teacher, confidante, mattress.

So no, childless people, just because I am hiding from my children does not make me a monster. Though I will more than likely look like one when I wake up tomorrow.

Back on Wednesday with actual news about the business, baked goods, and whatever else you’d like me to talk about. You’re always welcome to friend us on Facebook and give me suggestions for blog posts. Because it’s hard summoning the magic when it’s 1am and you’re trying to make yourself virtually invisible with a Captain America blanket.

Every year, Share Our Strength asks people around the country to help fight childhood hunger by hosting a bakesale. Since our lives sort of are a bakesale, and since childhood hunger is a cause near and dear to us, we are proud to announce that this is Great American Bakesale Week at Robicelli’s!

From this Tuesday til Friday, 25% of every single baked item sold at our store at DeKalb Market will be donated to Share Our Strength. And from Saturday the 21st til the end of April, we will feature a special item every day that will have 100% of it’s profits donated! The item will change every single day, so you’ll have excuses to make multiple trips.

We know that cupcakes, brownies and such are not the highest priced item in the world, and it might not seem all that important to leave your desk at Metrotech to come by, or maybe stop in one night on your way home from work. I thought the same thing too at first. But then I saw these facts on the SoS website:

$1 can provide a hungry child with 10 healthy meals

Only a dollar can do that! Buy a cupcake and 10 healthy meals come of that!

$4 can help provide a child facing hunger with a backpack full of healthy food over a weekend when school meals are not available

Grab a co-worker or two, come by for something sweet and a Manhattan Special, and you managed to feed a child by taking a coffee break

$9 can help connect a child with healthy lunches during summer when school is out

Swing by and pick up a dozen for your office. Not only are you now the most popular person at work, but THAT just happened.

Want to help us do even more good, but just can’t bring yourself to eat 500 cupcakes by yourself, no matter how delicious they may be?

Take the “No Kid Hungry” pledge. It’s totally, 100% free to do

Donate directly to our bakesale page. If every person who subscribes to our Tumblr or visits this website donated just a dollar a piece, we could raise over $50,000. We’re just hoping to be able to raise a simple $300 this week through internet donations. Pledge a few dollars, help spread the link, and let’s cross our fingers that we can make it happen!

Host a bakesale of your own. You don’t need to be a pastry chef or a wizard in the kitchen. Use cake mixes, refrigerated doughs- hell, even store bought stuff is fine! I’m hoping to be able to make cookies with my kids sometime this year and sell them in front of my parents house for less than a buck, just to show my boys how awesome it is to be involved in this. You can organize a group or just do it with your own family, but either way it’s a very fun way to get people together to do something wonderful.

Visit the NYC Food Blogger Bakesale on April 28th. This is part of a national movement where food bloggers all over the country will be participating in different cities. Last year they collectively raised close to $25,000- with your help we can break that record this year!

Now……the first cupcakes of the week!

IT’S FRIDAY THE 13TH!!!!  EVERYONE START FREAKING OUT ABOUT SOMETHING!!! HOW ABOUT THE MAYANS? DOES THAT SOUND GOOD TO EVERYONE?

Listen, the end of the world could happen today, or on any one of the THREE FRIDAY THE 13THS THAT ARE GOING TO HAPPEN THIS YEAR BECAUSE IT’S OBVIOUSLY THE END OF DAYS (it’s on Wikipedia so it’s legit).  I still busted my ass today making the magic happen. Booked a few weddings for this year for people who have decided to throw caution to the wind and continue living their lives.  Also planned out some really cool stuff I’m itching you tell you about, but have to wait until the final copy is edited.  And also locked up a new client that I can’t announce til Monday.

I know you guys hate Tumblrs like this where I’m all “Nyah nyah nyah, I know something you don’t know!”, but I’ve really got nothing else right now besides a bunch of tentative stuff in the pipeline and the whole end of the world thing.  Sorry. If you want straight up entertainment, go watch Pizza Boomerang. But if you just want mindless drivel, well then, you’re in the right place!

I also pretty much used up all my creativity today well in advance of this post.  I spent the bulk of the day working at my favorite cafe (and Robicelli’s client) Hom writing an article for a website that asked me to do it a little while ago (last summer).  I also finally put a tab up that links to some of my writing around the intertubes, and was thinking of listing some memorable blog posts as well.  If there’s anything you have found particularly memorable, go tell me on Facebook, as I’m always doing these things at 2am and really don’t know what’s going on here half the time.

And what was Matt doing while I was busy busting my ass in a gorgeous secret cafe drinking buckets of coffee? Well, he was making cupcakes.  So you should probably go eat one so he feels like he accomplished something, too.

I hope you all had a spectacular 4th- over here at the Robicelli’s camp, we went down to Princeton NJ for a few final days before DeKalb opens and we don’t have another full day off until after Christmas.  Monday, I had my Blackberry off ALL DAY, and actually got to enjoy the company of my husband and kids.  It was as incredible as it sounds (aside from the fact that it was 1000 degrees and everyone was really cranky and whining a lot.  So take away that and the rock that was lodged in my shoe, and it was a pretty perfect day).

Of course, as business owners time away isn’t all fun and games.  On Saturday as Matt took the kids to the pool, I sequestered myself in our hotel room and began work on the text portions of our eventual cookbook (coming in 2036).  After writing one page, I felt a little stuck, so I picked up my good friend Fany Gerson’s book My Sweet Mexico for inspiration.  It is really as perfect as cookbooks come- filled with heart and love for her country, outstanding photographs, incredible recipes, and a well deserved James Beard nomination to go with it all.  Seriously- completely flawless.

Then I looked at the one solitary page of our cookbook. In five short paragraphs, I managed to reference both my fear of pooping in the woods AND this one time Matt got hit in the nuts so hard that he threw up.

Maybe I should have said 2046 instead.

While we’re all waiting- maybe you should eat some cupcakes.  There’s a new one today that was one of the first 10 cupcakes we ever designed, yet somehow managed to sit on the bucket list for over two years.  Odessa, your time has come!

Thanks to you guys, we are two-thirds of the way to our IndieGoGo goal with only 48 hours left!!! So on Monday, you’re either going to get a “WOOHOO, WE DID IT!” post, or a “Ummm….heh…..so um….how you guys doing? We’re totally cool over here, really” post.  Considering I’m pretty much as stressed as all hell over this, I’m just going to move onto another subject while I silently freak out all weekend about it.

As you saw in my previous post, my new NonaBrooklyn column is up!  Please leave comments and share with your friends- that site is a full time job for some very, very good people, and I really want to see it do well.

So how you guys feeling? :D

We carried over a few of our St. Patty’s Day flavors to today, in the event some of you were responsible and are saving all your hard partying for a night where you don’t have work the next day. Or in the event you want a Car Bomb cupcake for breakfast today to soothe your hangover.  Whatever floats your boat.

Also, today is the LAST APPEARANCE of the Soda Bread cupcake for an entire year, so get on that!  It’s delicious!

Since I’ve been pimping out three projects hardcore for the better part of the past week, let’s just take a look at them in an efficient numbered list, because EVERYONE loves lists! It makes reading the same crap I’ve been talking about over and over and over look brand spankin’ new.  Also, if anyone can help me out with some Venn diagrams of these things for next week so I can keep things relevant and cutting-edge, that would be super sweet.

#1: INDIEGOGO: We are over 25% closer to our goal in our first week, so a HUGE thanks to everyone who contributed! And I really can’t emphasize this enough- the sooner we reach our goal, the sooner I’ll shut the hell up about IndieGoGo.  So if you want me to stop talking about it and get back to rambling about important stuff like why everything you think you know about the inevitable zombie apocalypse is TOTALLY WRONG and almost nothing about actual cupcakes, then get over there and throw us a couple of bucks! We have sweet prizes to boot!

#2: FACEBOOK: If you actually want to talk about cupcakes, then you need to hit up our Facebook page.  I’m taking peoples questions about baking, soliciting the FB community to help us design new cupcakes, and all that good stuff.  I’m trying my best to keep the discussion about zombies to at least under 35-40% over there. Place bets now on how long that’s going to last.

#3: ORDERS FOR JAPAN: Next week, 25% of all private orders for delivery will be donated to Doctors Without Borders to aid Japan. So if you’re having an office birthday, want to surprise a client with a gift, or throwing a party, next week is a DAMN good week to be ordering cupcakes.  Click on the “Private Orders” and “Cupcake Schedule” tabs up top for more info and to see what’s good for next week.

Now onto flavors!  Hope you all had the opportunity to check out our newest location in Midtown- JOE in Grand Central Terminal! And if you haven’t, then what are you waiting for?
